When a 19-year-old mixed martial arts fighter hit the mat during a kickboxing event, Michael Akhavan, a fourth-year medical student at the New York Institute of Technology in Old Brookville, said he and a team of students immediately jumped into action to save the fighter’s life.

The 19-year-old fell before the round began during an event over the summer, said Akhavan, who helped stabilize the fighter’s neck and take off his headgear. The fighter had been swaying and seemed to be fading just before he fell and any head trauma was delivered.

Akhavan is part of a student medical team at New York Tech that signs up to accompany associate professor Matthew Heller to sporting events to practice sports medicine. Heller says his goal is to train the next generation of doctors and to give them meaningful, real-life experience that they can get involved in early as medical or physician assistant students

Akhavan said he hadn’t been exposed to sports medicine before joining Heller. Now, he said he has plans to concentrate on physical medicine and rehabilitation, which can be incorporated into sports medicine

Homecoming took on a new meaning on Westbury High School’s turf field on Friday, Oct. 9, as students from the Scholars That Reach Independent Vocation class played in a soccer game that was held as part of the statewide Challenger program.

The program is in its second year at Westbury and brings teams of students with disabilities together for friendly competition in soccer.

Westbury played against Clarke High School on the sunny Friday afternoon. Coach Ryan Mulholland, a special education teacher in the district, said it’s the first time that some of his players experienced the glory of homecoming. He also noted that learning how to win graciously and lose are both important parts of the STRIVE class, which includes students ages 14 to 20.

The Challenger soccer program gives students with disabilities a chance to get active during modified games.

For some, like Chrismalie Demoncier, it was their first time playing on the team. Although she was the only girl playing for the Dragons, she played hard and loved getting the chance to hear her name announced before the game.

Long Island MacArthur Airport in Ronkonkoma has been named the Best Small Airport in America in the 2026 USA TODAY 10 Best Readers’ Choice Awards.

MacArthur Airport, which is owned and operated by the Town of Islip, has steadily climbed the national rankings, advancing from sixth place in 2020 to reaching the top spot in 2026.

At Broadway and Park Avenue is the landmark sign “Discover Huntington — All-American City.” This designation was awarded in 2002 by the National Civic League for “demonstrating innovation, inclusiveness, higher-than-average rates in civic engagement, and having distinctive cross-sector collaboration to address local challenges.” But earning this honor as a true ideal community took over 300 years, forging a proud heritage that surpasses any in the region.

On April 2, 1653, English colonists purchased 6 square miles of land and by 1656, the initial purchase was expanded to incorporate all land south to the ocean in current-day Babylon and further east to the Nissequogue River. The new purchase was named after the Connecticut settlement of Huntington.

Within the next 118 years, the town would become very independent-spirited and define itself as 90% Patriot during the American Revolution. On June 21, 1774, Huntington Town adopted the Declaration of Rights.

By the mid-19th century, the town had become a series of independent hamlets with bustling main streets, and sand mining, which accelerated with the development of the Long Island Rail Road in the 1860s.

As of 2026, many towns, villages, and hamlets are hemorrhaging a younger population, but Huntington Village and most of its surrounding communities have maintained their population and local talent.

Convicted Gilgo Beach serial killer Rex Heuermann of Massapequa Park is exhibit A in why New York State should allow investigators to use advanced DNA technology known as next-generation sequencing, experts say.

Some have raised privacy concerns, but authorities say NGS was pivotal in identifying Heuermann as a suspect after three decades at large

Heuermann, who pleaded guilty to TK counts of murder in June, was the first person in the state to face NGS evidence in a criminal court. Its admissibility was the subject of a lengthy court hearing in which the judge ultimately ruled that it was allowable.

NGS not only helped ID Heuermann, it also enabled investigators to identify some of his victims, including Valerie Mack and Karen Vergata.

Missy Cann, the sister of Gilgo victim Maureen Brainard Barnes, says “When science creates a new tool that can identify a victim or suspect, we have an obligation to use it.”

The Glen Cove City Council proposed to increase residential real estate taxes by 2.82% in 2027 at its Tuesday, Oct. 13 meeting as the city navigates a tough financial environment.

Glen Cove was the only Long Island municipality to receive a warning in the New York State comptroller’s latest evaluation of “fiscal stress,” while it finalized the $70.67 million budget proposal for the upcoming year. Mayor Pamela Panzenbeck said “pension contributions, healthcare benefits, collective bargaining increases, and other employee related costs” were straining the city’s budget, accounting for over 75% of the $57.86 million general fund.

Panzenbeck emphasized that the city still plans to levy below the tax limit set by the state as inflation has been going up again throughout the country.

The city is also expected to receive more in sales tax since it voted to stop sharing revenue with Nassau County last year. The council will hold its next meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 27, where it is expected to vote on the 2027 budget.

Several organizations and high-ranking officials have picked a side in one of the state’s battleground congressional districts, with U.S. Rep. Tom Suozzi (D-Glen Cove) garnering support from many coalitions and groups while former New York State Assembly Member Mike LiPetri, the Republican challenger, is backed by President Donald Trump and other top Republicans.

Suozzi has numbers on his side, as he has the public support of at least 34 labor unions and worker organizations, at least nine environmental, health and gun-safety organizations, and at least 21 civil rights, political reform and other political organizations. Suozzi’s list of supporters also includes the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Newsday, the Glen Cove PBA and the New York City District Council of Carpenters. The Nassau County Police Benevolent Association and the Uniformed Firefighters Association of Greater New York also recently announced their endorsement of Suozzi.

LiPetri’s list of supporters includes the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 138, the New York Republican Club and the National Republican Congressional Committee, but his most impactful backers are the president, vice president and speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives.

The race for New York’s third congressional district is a rematch from two years ago, when Suozzi won by roughly 2.5 percentage points.

A panel made up of New York State Assembly members, including one from Long Island, will convene before the end of the year to develop legislative recommendations on the state’s sexual assault statutes in the wake of the Cornell University gang rape case.

The panel’s primary focus will be to examine issues and perspectives on the state’s sexual assault statutes, according to a statement from Lavine’s office.

New York is one of 19 states across the country with voluntary intoxication laws, which state that individuals who choose to consume alcohol or drugs are not automatically considered unable to give consent. Under state law, someone is only deemed mentally incapacitated if the person was administered an intoxicating substance without the person’s consent. The statute also states that if the person became intoxicated voluntarily, the definition of “mentally incapacitated” is no longer applicable.

The Wantagh Chamber of Commerce recently held its annual Fall Fest Block Party with hundreds of locals in attendance. The event is just one of many seasonal events the organization puts together for the local community.

Matthew Kondrup, second vice president of the chamber, said events like the fall block party don’t act as fundraisers for the chamber but help spotlight businesses and bring more people to the community.

Alongside vendors local restaurants, including Mulcahy’s, Uncle Frank’s and the Wantagh Inn, were open, spilling with patrons. Live music emanated from either end of the festival, from rock bands playing ’90s hits and classic rock from the 1960s and ’70s.

A new playground at The Park at East Hills is the result of nearly two years of planning, testing and collaboration, with village officials and parents working to create a space that would serve children of different ages and abilities.

The Village of East Hills worked with GameTime and MRC Recreation to develop and put together the new playground, with village officials and parents involved throughout the design process. Committee members said they spent nearly two years interviewing playground vendors, visiting other playgrounds, testing equipment and reviewing multiple designs before settling on the new layout.

For East Hills Friends in the Park Committee member Madeline Natoli and Co-chair Fanny Boneh, the project was also personal. Both had brought their children to the park and approached the redesign from the perspective of parents.

Park Director Dave Squillante said the decision to open the playground before every final detail was complete came after the community had been patient while the project was being developed. Natoli and Boneh said the finished playground reflects the collaborative effort behind it, from the village’s elected officials and employees to the parents who helped shape the design.

For them, the goal was bigger than simply replacing an old playground.
