During a salmon run, fish don't all arrive at once. Instead, they return to their rivers and streams in waves that can last for weeks or even months.

What might look like one continuous salmon run is actually multiple groups of fish returning at different times, guided by their age, life history, and environmental conditions.

Each salmon can spend a different amount of time in the ocean before returning to spawn. Water temperature and river flow may also affect when salmon begin swimming upstream, with some fish waiting for more favorable conditions.

Even within the same population, salmon can have different migration and spawning times. Such diversity helps spread risk across the population. If conditions are poor during part of the spawning season, not every fish is affected in the same way.

When salmon return in waves, it's more than just a difference in timing. Staggered migration is part of the natural diversity that helps salmon navigate shifting environmental conditions. by @longlive.kings

On Sunday, a small group of LLTK supporters stood where a lake used to be. Watching salmon spawn where they haven't been able to reach in over a century.

Thank you, Vanessa Castle, for guiding us along the Elwha River and for sharing what restoration means to the Lower Elwha Klallam people: not just fish returning, but knowledge, ceremony, and relationships continuing. We were also grateful to be joined by William Frank III and Peggen Frank, from the Nisqually Indian Tribe, who shared their own perspectives on the harvest.

It was a day of real hope.

Your favorite fish-tracking game is back with a brand-new development: spawning salmon!

After 10 years of following the out-migration of juvenile smolts every spring, we have decided to bring the reverse journey to life in Survive the Sound: Homecoming. Rather than following young fish to the ocean, players can now choose their favorite adult spawning salmon and track their migration back home to the river where they were born.

This special edition of Survive the Sound will run from October 12 to October 16, so head over to www.SurviveTheSound.org to pick your fish and form your teams! And if you would like to learn more about the experience and how a spawning salmon's journey might differ from their younger counterparts, be sure to check out our latest blog post at lltk.org/newsroom/blog/ by @longlive.kings

It’s spawning season at Glenwood Springs Fish Hatchery on Orcas Island!

Check out this video from the receiving pond featuring around 650 schooling Chinook!

Each year, as many as 4000 Chinook return to the hatchery, and around 20 volunteers help spawn these large salmon. This community effort to spawn the next generation of Chinook is what makes Glenwood Springs Fish Hatchery special.
