Many of our members know Josh as a training partner, coach, friend, and one of our black belts.

This week, many others got to know him as the “Jiu Jitsu guy” after he helped restrain a disruptive passenger on a Frontier flight headed from Puerto Rico to Chicago.

We’re incredibly proud of Josh—not because he was involved in a viral moment 35,000 feet in the air, but because of how he handled himself. Calm under pressure. Focused on protecting others. Using only the force necessary to keep people safe.

Those qualities are what Jiu Jitsu is really about.

On May 31st 2026, a Flight from San Juan to Chicago was diverted to Miami after a passenger attempted to open the emergency exit door mid flight, tried to breach the cockpit, and attacked an off duty flight attendant.

Most passengers moved away. Josh Longood didn’t.

The Jiujitsu black belt was returning from his brother’s bachelor party when chaos broke out around him.

“The reality of it was very similar to what I pictured in my head. I’ve trained a long time for situations like these so it was like second nature.”

With limited space on a packed plane Josh used his grappling instincts to take control:

“When I engaged I knew that I had to get him down in the row and control him. I knew I needed to just mount him in the seat while controlling his movements until he got tired.”

He held the passenger down for 30 minutes until the plane made an emergency landing in Miami. The passenger was arrested on arrival and is now facing federal charges.

“I think my years of experience helped me handle this situation safely without anyone being injured. I don’t think someone who hasn’t trained jiu jitsu would have been able to do that.”

We found Mr. Jiu-Jitsu, and here’s what he had to say about the viral airplane incident.

When I ask him what percentage of his jiu-jitsu was needed, he said 2%. And this is my point, a little jiu-jitsu goes a looong way!

We had a visitor today and he looked SO familiar, that I thought he had visited us before. I asked if he had and he very humbly said something along the lines of: “no, but I did go viral recently on an airplane” and I knew that was exactly why he looked so familiar 🤣 the Jiu Jitsu guy that saved the day on the airplane!! Jiu Jitsu saves lives, y’all 🙌🏼 It was so great having you here with us today, Josh! Thank you for making the drive to come train with us! BJJ Black Belt, Josh Longood, went viral for saving a Frontier Airlines Flight.

Josh was on a flight home when another passenger allegedly started attacking workers and causing all sorts of chaos. The Bjj spidey sense in Josh’s head started to tingle and he handled the situation exactly how a black belt should. He was able to control the aggressive passenger, keep everyone calm, and go super viral while doing it!

Today, I (@thejoshmckinney) get to sit down with Josh and ask him exactly how he was able to subdue the passenger so easily. We also find out what Frontier Airlines did to thank him for saving everyone in what could have been an absolute disaster.

On this week’s episode of “Beardo and Weirdo,” not only do we have the banana costumed concert goer who was assaulted in Toronto at the direction of the band who shall not be named performing onstage, we also have the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Black Belt who went viral this week when he rose to the occasion and subdued an unruly passenger who had volunteered to help others as they were seated in the exit row! ✈️🥋 O QUE PODERIA TER TERMINADO EM TRAGÉDIA FOI EVITADO POR UM FAIXA-PRETA DE JIU-JITSU.

Durante um voo entre Porto Rico e Chicago, momentos de tensão tomaram conta da cabine quando um passageiro tentou abrir a porta da aeronave em pleno trajeto.

Foi então que Josh Longood, ex-lutador profissional de MMA e faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu, entrou em ação. Com rapidez, controle e sangue-frio, ele conteve o indivíduo e precisou neutralizá-lo em duas oportunidades para garantir a segurança de todos a bordo.

Após o incidente, Longood afirmou que agiu por sentir a responsabilidade de proteger as pessoas ao seu redor.
