On April 12 at 10:18AM I crossed into Deltaland! A day I will truly never forget. This journey tested me in every single way and I am a brand new woman because of it. So many tears, so many laughs, so many crazy late nights building myself into the woman I want to be. One of the best things that I will never do again!! 😝 Big shoutout to the 99 degrees of crimson fire. It was always 99 in and 99 out, and through it all, we remained dedicated to the process but more importantly dedicated to each other. The sisterhood of our line is truly unmatched and uniquely ours! My maternal grandmother’s name is Shigeko Iwata Kelley. She was born and raised in pre-WWII Japan. When her neighborhood in Osaka caught fire during the war, she fled to live with her grandparents in the countryside of Gifu-ken. After the war, she returned to Osaka, where she met my grandfather—a Black American soldier serving in the Allied Occupation. When they fell in love and got married, she left her culture, family, and homeland behind and never returned. Japan has always been a bit of an enigma to me. In so many ways I was raised Japanese without any context—until now. This trip meant so much to me. Ichigo ichie: one time, one meeting. This exact feeling and encounter will never happen again. It’s been a beautiful and amazing journey! My last day on Capitol Hill marks the end of a sweet and tender era of my career.
