Costa Rica on film. My first time traveling abroad.
Ricardo told us that a river ran through part of the small farm they have. “I wasn’t certain I should buy the farm until I saw the river and as soon as I did, I knew I had to have it as mine. This river, it’s magical: you go in with your troubles and it washes them away.” I was never baptized growing up. These days, I have found my own kinds of church. We were staying with Jacky’s relatives who I had just met only days before, but on the rocks by the river sitting close with them, I felt so at peace. I didn’t feel nervous or even really perceived; I definitely didn’t feel judged. I felt welcomed and loved, like I was among trusted family, even though I was technically among semi-strangers. Jack and I took one singular dunk underneath the cold mountain water as Betsy and Ricardo counted us down. It rushed over our bodies and the coldness of it was shocking and so cleansing. While I was still under, the current tried to take me with it. I heard Betsy say from above the water, “You have to stand yourself up, you have to stand your ground.” I caught my footing, came up for air, and tried not to cry, feeling overwhelmed to have a natural baptism of my own declaration in another country at 28. taken in Pérez Zeledón, San José, CR. by @lonrism

So happy to have a piece in this show (up at the Cressman Center until August 29) alongside so many artists I look up to, some of whom I am lucky enough to call dear friends. Huge congrats to Gray, who curated the show as part of their thesis! Thanks to all my buddies who showed out, not all pictured, and to those who sent me love from afar.
I’m really bad about taking process vids and pics so I’m trying to do better! Here are some super sped-up time lapses that I recorded each time I worked on this piece.
