Have you seen the November #JAVMA cover art? 🎨 🪶
.
“A New Life Begins” (base, 7 x 11 in, Australian burl; eggs, 3.5 x 5.5 in, cherry wood; acrylic paint) was created by @looien14 in 2020.
.
Dr. Richard Nye studied civil engineering @ucberkeleyofficial and received his DVM from @vetmedillinois after playing for @cubs as a pitcher.
.
He has practiced veterinary medicine for over 48 years, with a special interest in exotic pet medicine and surgery.
.
In 1985, Dr. Nye started the first all-exotic veterinary practice in the US with his partner, Dr. Susan Brown.
.
He created the piece on this month’s cover on commission for Dr. Jim Carpenter, who retired after 25 years as the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Avian Medicine and Surgery.
.
The piece features the hatchling of a whooping crane (Dr. Carpenter’s favorite bird) arising in a nest, made of turned, carved, and painted wood. by @looien14

Got a nice shout out from my veterinary association with a cover story of a piece I made for James Carpenter, past editor of the Journal of Avian Medicine and Surgery. It called a new life begins and represents whooping crane eggs with a hatchling. The eggs were turned from cherry, hatchling carved within the one egg and each painted with acrylic paint. The base is a burl from Australia. by @looien14
