Last year, the team behind Loop 51, a new bar in Amsterdam, invited me to design and build the sound system for their fresh concept — a lunch spot rooted in the local community, offering great sound, a delicious menu, and well-crafted drinks.

Their open, welcoming approach immediately inspired me: anyone can enjoy all kinds of music on a high-end system, try their hand at open decks, take DJ lessons, or hear an incredibly diverse lineup of DJs across every genre — all in a relaxed, unpretentious setting. It was exactly the kind of project I love to build for.

Now, a year after Loop 51 opened its doors, the feedback has been fantastic. Sharing the details of the system, however, is long overdue.

At the heart of the setup are vintage Altec 604e drivers, legendary components once found in many of the world’s top recording studios. I built new cabinets based on the Altec 620 drawings, customised and finished to blend seamlessly with the venue’s interior. I’ve made new crossovers using the highest quality parts, following Jeff Markwart’s schematic, to bring out the best in the 604s.

The speakers are powered by a custom-built 1130 amplifier, delivering 2 × 50 watts, and the system is fronted by a Resør rotary mixer, two Technics SL-1200 MK2 turntables, and Audio-Technica styli. All connections are made with a mix of 1130 cables and vintage studio wiring to preserve that authentic, classic sound character. taken in Loop51 by @loop51_ams
