@fat.icerace, zell am see.

Started at the 962 and ended at a salzburg 917, which is how most good stories end. taken in Zell am See by @loop_fred

The details are always the last thing you sort through:

A 944 and a lotus doing things neither was designed for, an old-timer rocking oldskool @fat.international drip, shadows longer than the cars, them fuchs wheels, the dakar in the cold, the pegasus, cayenne packed like it drove here from patagonia, those closed on bbs gold and a @porsche.motorsport 962.

1,100 horsepower. 800 kg. 1973.
The Porsche 917/30 was so fast it ended the Can-Am series. Not metaphorically. The other teams just stopped showing up. Mark Donohue won six of eight races for Penske that year. Twin-turbo flat-12. Sunoco blue. The math was cruel and the paint was perfect.
Still is. taken in Zell am See by @loop_fred

Mark Donohue was an engineer who drove race cars. Quiet. Precise. Polite enough that people called him Captain Nice. He set a closed-course speed record of 221 mph at Talladega in a variant of this car.
DieHard. Goodyear. Sunoco. When sponsorship was typography and typography was identity.

Aluminum tube space frame. Yellow-lipped rims. Tyres that had to negotiate with physics on behalf of 1,100 horsepower. The frame was pressurised with gas so they could check for cracks. If the gauge dropped, the structure was compromised. They drove it anyway.
Fifty years on and it still looks like it's from next year. People don't stand next to a 917/30. They crouch. Not worship — just trying to understand as explained by @alexandru74
