For those who couldn't make it to last week's class due to the Nor'easter, Toyomi-sensei, who is still staying in NY, held a make-up session!

The participant in the half-day class is an artist, so she worked incredibly efficiently and perfectly! She also purchased a kit, so we’re sure she'll be enjoying knotting at home from now on!

At Loop of the Loom, we'll soon be selling the wooden frame sets and yarn kits for knotting that we recently acquired. They are already available for purchase in Dumbo. taken in Loop of the Loom by @loopoftheloom

Knotting Sampler Workshop with Toyomi Harada
In Person / Workshop / Knotting

Saturday, September 26, 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM
Loop of the Loom – UES Studio
227 E 87th St, New York, NY 10128
(Capacity: Max 8 participants)

Sunday, September 27, 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM
Loop of the Loom – DUMBO Studio
197 Plymouth St, Brooklyn, NY 11201
(Capacity: Max 12 participants)

In this hands-on workshop, participants will learn the Turkish knot technique using a small wooden frame loom—a miniature version of the tool used to create the works on view in the exhibition. Working with yarn brought directly from Japan, each participant creates an 8 cm (approx. 3 1/8 in.) knotted sampler, which can be framed, or finished as a brooch or keychain to take home that day. (Persian knotting may also be introduced, time permitting.)

Knotting is a craft quietly gaining popularity across Japan. Unlike tufting, which requires a specialized gun and dedicated workspace, knotting asks only for a small loom, yarn, and patience. The technique is simple to learn yet endlessly expressive—each maker’s choice of color and pattern gives the work its own unique character.

This workshop is ideal for beginners, as well as anyone looking to master the basics before tackling a larger project. The wooden frame looms will also be available for purchase, allowing participants to continue their practice at home.

The session is led by Toyomi Harada, founder of Arts & Crafts Village, who has been instrumental in introducing the art of knotting to a wider audience in Japan.

Where Every Rug Begins: A Full-Day Knotting Workshop by Noriko Yamanaka
In Person/ Workshop / Knotting

Saturday, September 26, 10:00 AM – 4:30 PM
Loop of the Loom – DUMBO Studio
197 Plymouth St, Brooklyn, NY 11201
(Capacity: Max 12 participants)

Sunday, September 27, 10:00 AM – 4:30 PM
Loop of the Loom – UES Studio
227 E 87th St, New York, NY 10128
(Capacity: Max 8 participants)

A hand-knotted chair rug is more than a functional object—it is a beautiful, practical companion to daily life. A traditional Japanese craft reimagined for contemporary living, knotting is now brought to the US for the first time, and this workshop is one of the very first opportunities to learn it here.

In this full-day workshop led by Noriko Yamanaka from Arts & Crafts Village, Japan, you will learn the Turkish knot technique from the ground up. The day begins with a talk on the history of Akō Dantsu—a tradition that traveled the Silk Road to Japan, where it evolved to suit local climate and lifestyle. Today, this heritage faces the risk of disappearing, and this workshop is part of a dedicated effort to carry it forward.

Once you’ve learned the technique, all you need is a frame loom, yarn, and a little time to yourself—no heavy equipment or dedicated studio space required. Knot by knot, you’ll build a lasting skill and a design sensibility you can bring to every corner of your home.

Participants will select and purchase a kit in advance, choosing from a range of beginner-friendly designs. By the end of the day, you will learn how to warp the loom, tie the Turkish knot, and finish the edges. While you won't finish the entire chair rug in one day, you will take home your loom with your work-in-progress to complete at your own pace.

Knotting with Ako Gabbeh x Arts & Crafts Village - Japanese Craftswomen Knotting Life and Art
In Person / Exhibition / Knotting

On view: September 9 – October 1, 2026 (Mondays closed)

Closing Reception: October 1, 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM

Loop of the Loom
197 Plymouth Street, Brooklyn, New York, 11201

At the heart of Japanese craftsmanship lies a long tradition in which nameless makers have quietly infused everyday objects with beauty. Loop of the Loom is proud to present an exhibition of hand-knotted works by members of Ako Gabbeh, a collective of weavers who carry this tradition forward, transforming the humble chair rug into a canvas for storytelling.

For this exhibition, we welcome members of Ako Gabbeh from Japan, who will showcase more than 15 works. The exhibition also features the "Mountain" series by Noriko Yamanaka (Arts & Crafts Village), who will serve as a workshop instructor, as well as highly skilled Dantsu (traditional Japanese rug) by Rie Sakagami.

Though still little known in the US, hand-knotting is a living art form that bridges everyday life and art—and with this month-long exhibition, we bring it to new audiences.

Golden hour light on Plymouth Street, happy faces, and pure earth colors.

Our outdoor Earth Color Eco-Dyeing Workshop in Dumbo was an absolute dream! As the sun dipped over Brooklyn, kids plunged straight in with joyful energy while adults thoughtfully layered natural pigments, creating one-of-a-kind textile art with their used garments and white materials.
The real magic of Bengala dye and Shibori is that moment of truth—unwrapping your piece to reveal a design you could never have predicted. Pure magic!
Thank you for joining us, everyone! While our Bengala workshops for this year have officially wrapped up this weekend, the creative journey never stops.
Mindful crafting is always better together at Loop of the Loom. We are already preparing exciting next workshops. Stay tuned, or visit the link in our bio to see what’s coming next!

Slow Crafts in a Fast-Moving City - Kids Fiber Arts Club (Ages 8–14) Early Bird Registration is Open Now!

In a world that moves faster every year, we offer children something increasingly rare: the chance to slow down, work with their hands, and make something real.

At Loop of the Loom — in the heart of New York City — students learn to work the floor loom, sew by hand and machine, and spin their own yarn, while exploring the full breadth of textile arts. These skills take time and patience to master. And what children gain here goes beyond technique — they discover the quiet satisfaction of making something with their own hands, start to finish.

On high-energy days, we dive deep into advanced artisan skills. On harder days, the loom is simply a place to unwind and heal from a demanding school schedule. Last year, students spun their own yarn, wove on floor looms, and crafted beautiful baskets from thread.

To protect this experience, we keep our classes intentionally small. We never stop a child from making a mistake — we let them learn through it. This is why so many students stay with us for years, and why so many return as adults. What begins here shapes how a child sees their own creative potential for the rest of their life.

We look forward to welcoming new faces into our community, and to the start of what we hope will be a deeply enriching, lifelong journey with us. by @loopoftheloom

Earth Color Dye Lab is a workshop designed to help you learn the art of natural dyeing for your everyday sustainable living.

Don’t throw away that favorite t-shirt just because it’s looking a bit washed out, or that expensive linen shirt with the accidental stain. Bring them in and give them a beautiful new life! Our goal is to help you fall in love all over again with the pieces you already cherish.
You can book a date and bring your own materials to dye, or just pick from what we have on the day. We’ve got a variety of premium blanks ready for you, including T-shirts (for kids and adults), bandanas, cotton items, paper, and wool yarn.
We will open our dye tables with a colorful palette of Bengala mud dyes, alongside Aijozome Indigo dye! Our passionate instructors will provide hands-on guidance on creating amazing Japanese shibori (tie-dye and itajime) patterns.
Bengala Mud Dye is one of the oldest natural dyes and is completely non-toxic. This workshop is highly beginner-friendly, and the dyeing method is super easy—making it perfect for individuals, friends, or families to enjoy together
