Over at Debutiful Dot Net, we launched our new series WRITER/TRANSLATOR, where (you guessed it) a writer and translator discuss a book they worked on together.

First up is @lopez.true and @robinepmyers discuss the Chilean writer’s PEDRO THE VAST.

Today is Tuesday, which means it’s Pub Day! 📚

We’re celebrating the release of Pedro the Vast by Simón López Trujillo.

This tense and unsettling novel pulls readers into a world shaped by environmental strain, illness, belief, and survival. As a mysterious disease spreads and one man survives when others do not, different forces attempt to explain what is happening, setting the stage for a story that steadily builds toward an unforgettable conclusion.

A powerful new release for readers drawn to speculative fiction with atmosphere, psychological intensity, and depth.

Which part of this story intrigues you most, the mysterious illness, Pedro’s survival, or the different ways people try to explain what’s happening? by @lopez.true

🌱 Coming next month ...

PEDRO THE VAST
by Simón López Trujillo (@lopez.true), translated by Robin Myers (@robinepmyers)

Simón López Trujillo‘s ‘mind-blowing’ (Gabriela Cabezón Cámara) debut takes readers into a dry and degraded, fire-prone landscape where humanity has encroached a step too far into the natural world, and a deadly fungus mounts its own resistance.

A eucalyptus farm worker named Pedro starts coughing. Several of his coworkers die of a strange fungal disease, which has jumped to humans for the first time, but Pedro, miraculously, awakes. His survival fascinates a foreign mycologist, as well as a local priest, who dubs his mysterious mutterings to be the words of a prophet.

For readers of Jeff VanderMeer and Samanta Schweblin, López Trujillo is a next-generation Bolaño with a fresh, speculative edge and a mind that’s always one step ahead of us.

‘An inspired mycelial novel that is as propulsive as it is unsettling. Myers shines in her translation of fever dream while López Trujillo, with the eccentric darkness of much of the best contemporary Latin American literature, hypnotises and haunts.’
Jennifer Croft, author of The Extinction of Irena Rey

Out 3 Feb in Australia and NZ, 12 Feb in the UK. Pre-order available now ✨️ by @lopez.true
