Well you know it by now.

I have moved to Hong Kong and I am curating the bar program for @ilpresidentehk .

It's something new to me, I did hotels all my life. But I am happy to have such a great team around me to build something special.

What can I say... The place is open, the cocktails are cocktailing.
I am not the young cat behind the bar I once was but come visit me, sit at the bar and let's chat while we enjoy the show unfolding around us.

IL PRESIDENTE @ilpresidentehk is not just another Italian restaurant opening. It's an intentional recreation of 80s and 90s Italian glamour where dining is performance, generosity is operational, and abundance is the entire point.

When we positioned IL PRESIDENTE, Chef @marcymakk, his partner @felixdarriaga and bartender @lord.ciambr had a very clear idea of who they were: Not "a fine Italian restaurant," not "Italian classics." This was about a deliberate aesthetic (VHS-era Italy), a specific emotional tone (playful, unapologetic joy), and a service philosophy (theatrical, generous, communal).

Someone seeking refined minimalism or molecular gastronomy is not the audience here. No, the audience we wanted understands why hospitality is performance and abundance is generosity.

Some of our messaging therefore included:

🇮🇹 : The concept is rooted in 80s and 90s Italian culture across not just the food, but the entire era. The cocktail menu references Serie A football, Cantautorato Italiano, and Laura Pausini. The bar programme is built around aperitivo hour. The design evokes fur-draped socialites and power brokers.

🍨 : Every element is theatrical and intentional. Tableside service (porchetta carved at table, gelato churned and whipped tableside). Custom napkins embroidered with "Il Solito" (the usual). Dramatic plating and sharp uniforms. This is performance as hospitality.

🍝 : Chef Marcello's "new classic" philosophy honors regional Italian cooking without reinvention. The menu is anchored in time-tested recipes and are the dishes that define Italian comfort.

3 months into their launch, and IL PRESIDENTE is the most celebrated Italian restaurant in Hong Kong atm. They have launched their dinner service, and now their cocktail programming... and soon, they open for lunch! taken in Il Presidente HK by @lord.ciambr

Tomorrow I’m off to Fukuoka for my last Japan jolly for now, so it seems fitting to recap the last adventure with @lord.ciambr from Akashi - Kobe - Ikuchijima - Onomichi and Hiroshima. From vastly underprepared 35km bike rides and accidental hikes to doing what we do best - drinking highballs and chatting shit. Introducing IL PRESIDENTE @ilpresidentehk an atmospheric throwback to the heyday of Italy’s glamour era, opening on Central’s Duddell Street.

Evoking the decadent spaces inhabited by the power brokers and fur-draped socialites of Italy’s VHS era, IL PRESIDENTE brings vaunted classics of both the gastronomic and liquid traditions under one roof with a full restaurant and cocktail bar programme.

Guests first ascend the historic Duddell Street granite steps before entering via a sunset-orange façade. Inside the 70-seat space tells a broader story of Italian sprezzatura that brings back to life a time when well-dressed signore e signori had no qualms about enjoying life to the fullest.

In the kitchen, Executive Chef and co-founder Marcello Scognamiglio @marcymakk executes a “new classic” food philosophy that focuses on elevating recognisable Italian dishes through the use of exceptional ingredients, honouring the inherent brio of regional cooking.

Chef Marcello explains: “IL PRESIDENTE is inspired by nostalgic Italian flavours. The menu thrives on unapologetic Italian classics, honouring the rich history of regional Italian cooking without any desire to reinvent it. Instead, the kitchen anchors itself in time-tested, foundational recipes — the very dishes that define Italian comfort for generations.”

IL PRESIDENTE treats its bar as an equal priority to the restaurant, elevating the traditional aperitivo hour into a focal point of the evening. Designed to accommodate 10 to 14 guests around an intimate, L-shaped counter, the bar is helmed by Simone Ciambrone @lord.ciambr whose global provenance includes The Ritz London, Donovan’s Bar at Brown’s Hotel, The Dorchester, and most recently the Bvlgari Ginza Bar in Tokyo.

IL PRESIDENTE’s first cocktail menu hews closely to this philosophy. Endeavouring to bring guests back to the most iconic periods of modern Italian history, the collection of 12 cocktails serves as a snapshot of Italy – when American influence on Italian pop culture was reaching its zenith, the Serie A football league ruled TV screens, and Cantautorato Italiano blared from radios across the country. taken in Duddell Street by @lord.ciambr

A first look at @ilpresidentehk , a new Italian restaurant by the team behind @trattoriafelinohk .

Chef and co-founder Marcello Scognamiglio @marcymakk had created a menu that features classic Italian dishes. Think seafood arancini, handmade pasta, a crispy porchetta and velvety gelato served tableside.

Over at the bar, Simone Ciambrone @lord.ciambr crafts cocktails inspired by Italian tradition and culture, where drinks such as Piazza Duomo, Amores Extranos and Bunga Bunga nod to the flair of Italy from the 70s to 90s.

The restaurant takes inspiration from the glamour of 1980s Milan, where sprezzatura (effortless elegance) and opulence defined the lifestyle of the era. Designed by @seandixdesigns , the 70-seater space is characterised with rosewood accents, leather furnishings and deep orange tones, where each corner offers a thoughtful combination of Belgian velvet, British leather, soft lighting and plush carpets.

Il Presidente is now open for reservations and walk-ins.
