AWAKENING

Thousands of years ago, Zarathustra entrusted humanity with the freedom to shape its own destiny.

But somewhere along the way, we surrendered that freedom to divine authority, religious obedience and the promise of protection.

Perhaps Zarathustra’s second coming won’t be the return of a prophet, but humanity’s awakening to reclaim what it abandoned.

FREE WILL

If God already knows every choice you will ever make, are you truly free?

Zarathustra’s teachings offer a fascinating perspective on divine wisdom, moral responsibility, and the possibility of an open future.

Perhaps knowing every possible future is not the same as determining which one will unfold.

MONOTHEISM

Was Zarathustra a monotheist? And does believing in one God make a religion any more truthful?

Exploring the Gathas, Ahura Mazda and monotheistic emanationism, and why the nature of what we worship may matter more than the number of gods we believe in.

AMESHA SPENTA

Who, or what, are the Amesha Spenta?

Separate divine beings, or eternal expressions of one divine consciousness?

Exploring Zarathustra’s Gathas through the lens of monotheistic emanationism, and the profound relationship between divine wisdom and the human mind.

Belief

Can belief be commanded? And if genuine conviction cannot be chosen, can its absence justly be punished?

In the Gathas, Zarathustra approaches Ahura Mazda, Lord Wisdom, through enquiry, devotion and even friendship.

What if the sincere pursuit of truth is itself an act of devotion?

Perhaps the first step isn’t conviction or conversion. It’s conversation.

AHRIMAN

Did Zarathustra invent the Devil?

Angra Mainyu would eventually become Ahriman, the great adversary of later Zoroastrianism.

But what Zarathustra originally described in the Gathas may be considerably more unsettling than a demon lurking in the darkness.

Perhaps the Devil was never entirely outside us.

CONVERSION

“Zoroastrianism doesn’t accept converts.”

It may be one of the most persistent misconceptions about one of the world’s oldest surviving religions.

Zarathustra’s own words tell a rather different story. The Gathas show a teacher actively seeking people willing to listen, reflect and choose for themselves. They place no hereditary restriction on who may follow his path, nor prescribe a convoluted initiation process for doing so.

Later Zoroastrian communities developed very different approaches to conversion, from formal initiation to effectively closing the door altogether.

But perhaps following Zarathustra was never fundamentally about what you inherited.

It was about what you chose, and how you lived that choice.

Good thoughts. Good words. Good deeds.

STRUGGLE

Before Zarathustra’s message survived for thousands of years, he struggled to make himself heard.

In the Gathas, we occasionally glimpse the man behind the teachings: facing rejection, powerful opponents and uncertainty about whether his mission would succeed.

He sought people willing to listen, reflect and choose. And eventually, figures such as Vištāspa appear among those who supported his cause.

Later tradition would turn these fragments into a much larger story of opposition, persecution and eventual breakthrough.

But the struggle itself begins in Zarathustra’s own words:

“Where shall I go? Where shall I turn?”

DAĒVA

What happened to the gods Zarathustra rejected?

Across the ancient Aryan world, Deva described beings regarded as divine. But in ancient Iran, its cognate Daēva took a radically different path.

In the Gathas, Zarathustra condemns the Daēvas for their choices — and challenges the idea that power, antiquity or divine status makes something worthy of reverence.

Later Iranian tradition would go even further: Indra, one of the greatest celestial beings of the Vedic world, appears among the Daēvas.

Perhaps Zarathustra’s revolution was not simply about which gods people worshipped — but whether the beings they called gods deserved their reverence at all.

MITHRA

Mithra was already ancient when Zarathustra composed the Gathas.

One of the great divinities of the ancient Aryan world, Mithra was associated with contracts, agreements, covenants and oaths — with trust, truthfulness and keeping one’s word.

And yet Zarathustra never invokes Mithra as a divinity.

So why does Mithra disappear from the Gathas, only to re-emerge as one of the great yazatas of the later Zoroastrian tradition?

Perhaps what survived was not simply a god — but an idea worth preserving.

ARYAN

What did Aryan actually mean?

Long before the word became entangled with modern racial ideology, cognates of it were used by the ancient Indo-Iranian peoples themselves — appearing in the Vedas, the Avesta and even the inscriptions of Darius the Great.

Its history also survives somewhere unexpected: in the name Iran itself.

Perhaps reclaiming the word does not mean reclaiming an “Aryan race,” but recovering an ancient cultural and ethical inheritance from those who appropriated it.
