What is memory for fossil landscapes? A kind of writing that has many directions, never linear, sometimes twisted, and recently human. Their words are inscriptions read through time and the fragments of past destructions. If something is preserved, who writes first in our archival machines, if not the landscape? - excerpts from Fossil Cinema, a book developed during Jan van Eyck Residency 2026

—

Lorena Mal is a mexican interdisciplinary artist whose work explores memory, history and territory through installation, film, sound, performance and drawing. Her research integrates archives, collective listening and non linear narratives that aim to destabilize hegemonic systems of knowledge. In her work, geopolitical and geological forces affect bodies and materials through dynamics of mutual transformation, preservation and destruction, shaping both land and culture.

What is cinema if not an imprint of the world? Our fossil-based realities have led me toward the moving image, where sound and movement are both geological and cinematographic, and where cinema becomes another way of archiving impressions in and with the landscape: a Fossil Cinema.

What futures can be imagined through deep time beyond the horizon of extinction? I turn to fossil landscapes as sites through which to examine the political implications of our interconnected histories and the possibility of deep futures. Memories persist, circulate, and return through fossilized forms of energy—the Earth’s working forces, embodied in the animal, botanical, and mineral bodies of the past and the present.

“Unearthing the hidden narratives beneath our feet, Mexican artist Lorena Mal is revealing the deep entanglements between land and power.” una nota por Ambika Subra @ambikasubra que amé de hace tiempo, gracias por tus palabras que me acompañan 🙏🏽🌺❤️‍🔥

“Mal reframes the land as an active force—one that remembers, resists, and refuses erasure. Her practice is not simply an exploration of landscape; it is a reconfiguration of how we engage with the world itself. (...) The soil itself became testimony—not just a metaphor, but an active record of conflict, survival, and resistance. (...) Both earth and breath become modes of listening—fragile yet persistent archives of what landscapes remember.”

Can we really dream in museums? In times of war, is it any difference? Sanctuaries and oasis are places that are built collectively by many caring forces. I’m proud to be an artist so there could be spaces to fall asleep without fear and have a big dream together, to be so comfortable that we could rest, take care of each other and gain forces to build a reality that is worth being tired with. What artists can do in times of war? Not only as humans and committed citizens of a more-than-human planet Earth. While the bombs hit, and the explosions continue, far and close, we will be building bridges, we will be making tunnels, we will be holding dreams and making music and sweating with joy a dance that could help us cross the fire facing directly to the eyes of the perpetuator and beyond, so beyond so we can remember the future and plan something for those days ahead of us when someone will remember the past that is now ours.
