Choosing colour combinations is so difficult and doesn’t always work. And the glaze takes so long to apply as I am painting or sliptrailing into each interior shape and its border. I have been building a new range of stamped vessels, and looking at many variations of glaze and colour, they are nearly done! I love this collection of samples but often on a larger scale they don’t always work out as planned! We will see what happens in the firings. #Ceramics #pottery #handmade #coiledpottery #porcelain coiled design interiordesign customceramics ceramicclass ceramicinstructor torontopottery torontoceramics customdesign livingroomdecor sculpture architecture southafrican southafricanartist southafricanintoronto by @lorenkaplan

Colour has arrived in @lorenkaplan ‘s newest work.

A departure from her predominantly neutral palette, the exterior colour of these works wasn’t created with glaze. Instead, Loren added ceramic stain directly to white stoneware clay, making the colour part of the material itself.

In these new works, Loren returns to the botanical references that have informed her practice for a long time. Again, she looks closely at the internal structures of plants and how what exists inside supports and determines what we see on the outside. For these pieces, a fluid flux glaze on the interior draws the eye inward, reinforcing that relationship between inside and outside.

Loren built each sculpture slowly by hand and intuitively allowing one form to inform the next. She also worked smaller in scale which required an even more concentrated way of working - intense and sometimes difficult to sustain for a long time. Smaller certainly doesn’t equate to easier or faster!

Now available in the gallery and online.

From the minute I started working with clay and making vessels, it felt like home. It was an intuitive and tactile experience that didn’t need words or explanation. When I saw this quote from Chassidic texts and learnt what it meant, it explained my obsession to repeat making vessels. Making vessels for me is all about making space…..physical, spiritual, emotional space. Making space for potential. Because if there is t space then there isn’t a container for something to be held or something to offer. Central to the vessel is the notion of emptiness and fullness, for what is a vessel if not a form that contains something or nothing. I embrace the idea of emptiness, as in emptiness there is potential. #vessels #ceramics #pottery #handmade coiledpottery porcelain coiled design interiordesign customceramics ceramicclass ceramicinstructor torontopottery torontoceramics customdesign livingroomdecor sculpture architecture southafrican southafricanartist southafricanintoronto by @lorenkaplan

What draws an artist to porcelain when it is known for being one of the most demanding ceramic materials to work with?

For artist @lorenkaplan the answer lies in the tension built into the material itself. Porcelain has the potential to feel limitless, but it also has specific demands. It requires control; the studio must be organized, clean, and carefully maintained. Yet once Loren begins working, “there is a feeling that the material can be pushed further and further, beyond what is possible with other clays.”

This balance between containment and freedom is at the heart of Love in a Mist, the three-piece series included in Porcelain Reconsidered. Built slowly by hand, the work requires a pace that allows the artist to find clarity. It quiets distraction and encourages a more attentive engagement with the material. Porcelain demands this care.

Loren is drawn to the balance between control and risk, fragility and strength. Through her work with porcelain, she continually negotiates these limits, allowing the form to emerge through both intention and response.

Porcelain Reconsidered is on view for two more days until Saturday, June 20. Visit us!

I have been working with porcelain for a long time and drawn to many qualities that it brings. The quality of translucency to create light; its softness and whiteness and its ability to enable an expansion to create forms beyond one’s own imagined boundaries. The following is the text I sent to @vesselsandsticks for their exhibition ‘Porcelain Reconsidered’. When I begin works made with porcelain there is a feeling of limitlessness and containment at the same time. I love these two seemingly contradictory elements. There is a sense of reigning in as everything around has to be clear, clean and sorted, the space of working clearly defined. And when I start feeling and working with the material I feel that I can go on and on forever, pushing the boundary of the material in a way one is unable to do with other clays. Both these things bring lightness and clarity to the making. Because I hand build, I also have to go much more slowly and that slowness stops all the noise in my mind and heart.
There are also many disruptions and failures working with porcelain, taking it too far, too thin that it collapses in the making or in the firing but the challenge for me is worth it. The thinness one can achieve, the translucency when chosen and the purity of the whiteness. by @lorenkaplan
