Travel. Reimagined. Modern travel is full of unnecessary friction: wasted time, missed moments, and constant stress. Vertical Aerospace’s vision is a future where travel gives that time back.For @verticalaerospace latest campaign, we developed a cinematic, character-led film grounded in relatable, everyday moments. 48 hours to make a cinematic, emotive docu-style ad capturing a world first for electric aviation?Challenge accepted.We’ve been working with pioneers of electric aviation, @verticalaerospace since 2021, back when the aircraft existed as CAD drawings and big dreams. Prison drama Wasteman, directed by Cal McMau, follows parolee Taylor, whose hopes of a fresh start are jeopardised by the arrival of Dee, a new cellmate who drags Taylor into his world of dangerous prison rivalries. BAFTA nominated and 5x BIFA winner, Wasteman is captivating audiences with its bold new look at life inside prison. Lorenzo Levrini’s cinematography is raw and visceral, relying on intimate handheld camerawork that participates in the action as much as it observes. The unusual 3:2 aspect ratio promotes a profound sense of claustrophobia. Focus Canning provided the camera package, which consisted of an Alexa Mini LF, an expanded set of Canon FD primes and a Cooke Varotal 18-100 zoom on a 1.6x expander. “I was very keen to juxtapose the handheld camerawork against slow zooms to support the building of tension like a pressure cooker. I wasn’t sure what zoom would work best for us on the LF – it couldn’t be too big as we were shooting in tiny cells, but I wanted something old enough to cut well with our FD primes”. Lorenzo continued: “Focus Canning’s Lens Designer Eddie suggested the Cooke Varotal and found the best expander for my needs. As usual, Focus Canning provided impeccable support and guidance. "To enhance the sense of naturalism in the studio, I was keen that there be a variety of lighting looks in the cell. We wanted subtle variations in the daylight, to reflect different times of day and different levels of overcast. "Prison is not just bleak: the entire gamut of human emotion exists in there, and I wanted to reflect this in the lighting, so sometimes the daylight is overcast and muted but sometimes we bring in a shaft of sunlight. At night, we played with different combinations of the in-cell lights and decided there should be a greenish security light outside the cell window."Director Cal McMau’s debut feature, Wasteman, follows Taylor (David Jonsson), an inmate who is up for early release. His chances are jeopardised when he gets a new cellmate, Dee (Tom Blyth), who threatens to drag him into his world of violence and prison rivalry.
