The destination was Constantinople. Instead, the sea gave them Ravello, a cliff above the Amalfi coast, their personal haven beyond sky and sea.

In the 11th century, a patrician Roman family was shipwrecked on their way to the new centre of the Roman Empire, Constantinople. They arrived instead in Ravello, "the balcony of the Amalfi Coast." It was here, high above the waters that brought them there, where they built an estate, Palazzo d'Afflitto, 'the place of the afflicted,' in memory of both their shipwreck and the suffering of their family martyr, Eustachio.

In the centuries that followed, the estate had been in and out of ruin as Ravello and Amalfi were destroyed, but by the 16th century, the estate had been rebuilt again.

In 1893 Pantaleone Caruso, a hotelier and vineyard owner, rented five rooms in one of the palace wings. They opened as the Pensione Belvedere until the hotel came to occupy the entire palazzo, with 24 rooms, and its name was changed to Hotel Caruso Belvedere.

A place this family never planned to go became the destination they never left.

A place as resilient as the family that first built it, that is Belmond Hotel Caruso. The haven beyond sky and sea.
