“I want to create things that are infinite, expand beyond the canvas.” —Yayoi Kusama

Yayoi Kusama’s life and work have always meant something deeper to me than the beautiful polka dot art and infinite spaces that made her famous. She experienced profound mental health struggles throughout her life, including hallucinations that began in childhood, yet she found a way to transform those experiences into art.

She created infinite worlds out of her own mind. Worlds where there were no boundaries, where one person could stand surrounded by endless light and reflections and suddenly feel connected to something much larger than themselves.

Eight years ago, I was able to take my students to the High Museum of Art to experience Kusama’s work. I loved watching these young artists step into her world and see that sometimes our struggles, our differences, and even the things we cannot fully explain can become the very things that make our creative voices unique.

Thank you, Yayoi, for showing us that there can be beauty in the places our minds take us, that difference can become strength, and that art can create connection where words sometimes cannot. Thank you for sharing your infinite world with us.

I was born in Korea and had never returned until now. Raised by my white father in a predominantly white community, I felt like someone whose story felt incomplete. My Korean heritage was always a part of me, but it was a part I longed to deeply understand. My mother lived across the country for much of my childhood, and because of that distance, there were pieces of both her story and my own that I never fully knew. This journey became not only a chance to reconnect with my heritage, but also a way to better understand my mother, her roots, and the part of her that lives within me. Walking the streets of Korea, hearing the language, experiencing the culture, smelling the Korean dishes I love so much and seeing faces that looked like mine stirred so many emotions. It felt familiar and unfamiliar all at once. I was discovering pieces of myself and it felt like I was getting to know my mother as well. Somehow, this experience was even sweeter because I shared it with my son who in two short months will start college at UGA. I’m soaking in all my time with him before he starts his next chapter and to share this with him is something I’ll treasure forever.

This trip was about finding home in a place I never truly knew, honoring the woman who gave me that heritage, and sharing that journey with someone I love most. My heart came home in more ways than one. taken in Seoul, South Korea by @loriacuttle

I had the privilege and honor of presenting at the #NAEA (National Art Education Association) conference in Chicago this past weekend. It was a whirlwind filled with 5,000 art teachers, art, artists, laughter, beautiful architecture, and lots of plane cancellations and delays 🤪. Thank you @alexmireille for keeping me sane!
