My hummers are still here getting ready for migration! They typically leave SE Michigan around mid-September for the Winter. A sad time of the year for me, as they are truly one of the best parts of each day.

Twice a year, the Ruby Throated Hummingbird drinks itself fat. Doubling their body weight for a journey of a thousand miles. The most impressive part being their solo migration over the Gulf of Mexico. A 18-20 hour non-stop flight of approx 500 miles! These little birds are tough as nails.

Marigold, the one flower that I always plant in my veggie garden! I never have pest issues thanks to these babes. Their strong scent mask vegetables and confuse pests. They also boost soil health, attract pollinators, and add a bright colorful aesthetic to your garden! They come in hues of red, yellow, and orange, and bloom all season long.

Once you grow marigolds you’ll never have to buy the seeds again. Each flower head contains approx 30-100 seeds, and are extremely easy to harvest. Harvest from spent flower buds that look dry and let the seeds dry out. Store in an airtight container and enjoy for years to come!

Marigolds are also one of the best flowers to use to make natural dye. It’s so easy! Just simmer the flowers in a stainless steel pot for about 30 minutes, strain the liquid then return to pot, add your pre-wetted fabric or yarn to the pot and simmer on low for another 30 minutes.

My foxgloves that I grew from seed last year are putting on quite the show. One of my favorite flowers for sure! I love a cottage-core vibe 💗

These are great to have in your garden not only for whimsical effect 🧚 but they’re one of the first bloomers, so they help add color & height to the garden while everything else blooms & fills in! Some fun facts about foxgloves:

1. They are highly toxic ☠️ They contain a chemical called digitalis that can be used to treat heart failure & high blood pressure by raising blood flow & increasing the body’s defense mechanisms. The plant is poisonous if consumed directly & can cause a number of health problems. Use caution with pets & children, & wash hands after touching.

2. They bloom from June to September. Peak bloom time is late spring to early summer. To keep blooming cut down spent stalks so the plant will produce smaller secondary stalks.

3. They are a magnet for hummingbirds & bumblebees 🐝
The bell shape acts perfectly as a sheltered tunnel to gather nectar & pollen. If you’re looking to attract these pollinators to your garden any plants with bell shaped blooms are 💯

4. The name foxglove 🦊 comes from an old folklore that foxes wear the flowers on their paws to muffle their footsteps when raiding henhouses. Other names include goblin gloves, witches gloves, & deadman’s bells.

5. They are biennials. In their first year, they produce a low set of leaves; in their second, they shoot up a flower spike & die after seeding. Despite their short lived life-cycle a single plant can produce up to 2 million seeds! So ultimately they act as perennials - since the following season new plants will grow from these seeds. by @loroseatkinson

Suddenly, the wind began to blow.
Within it, a familiar season of change we all know.
Then why does it always seem so sudden?
That familiar call, when the leaves begin to fall.
The flowers begin to decay & the days start to get away.
Why do we always feel that sense of surprise?
Like we didn’t expect this great demise.
Change is the only constant in life.
So why does is it always cut like a knife?
The seasons have a unique way of reminding us.
That again, the days will get longer & brighter.
The leaves will grow back & everything will feel lighter.
The birds begin to sing again.
The flowers begin to bloom.
The bees & butterflies start to float on by.
Like a reunion with a long lost friend.
Suddenly, after a long winter of darkness, life begins again.

A piece of me has been missing for quite some time. It’s time I put myself back together again. I catch myself looking at past pieces in awe of who I was. Who “I am”.

It’s funny how when you take 10 steps back you see things differently. Over the past decade of making jewelry there’s been countless times I’ve been way too hard on myself. The OCD perfectionism was out of control. The number of pieces I scrapped because of a minor flaw, when that “flaw” gave the piece the character it needed.

Now I see it for what it is. A unique skill set I harnessed out of true passion and determination. I can finally say I’m proud. I’ve felt a lot of shame that I haven’t been able to bring myself back there. But now I realize the 10 steps back were what I needed to see clearly.

During my hiatus I found a new passion with gardening and it fulfilled me in ways jewelry couldn’t - but I haven’t felt complete since I stepped away from the bench. So I’m finally dusting it off and getting back to who I am.

Instead of overwhelming myself with creative pressures after a year long burnout, I’m going to revisit these flower designs. Jewelry + flowers just makes sense to me 🌼💗 by @loroseatkinson
