Social Realism developed as a reaction against idealism and the exaggerated ego encouraged by Romanticism. Consequences of the Industrial Revolution became apparent; urban centers grew, slums proliferated on a new scale contrasting with the display of wealth of the upper classes.

With a new sense of social consciousness, the Social Realists pledged to “fight the beautiful art”, any style which appealed to the eye or emotions. They focused on the ugly realities of contemporary life and sympathized with working-class people, particularly the poor.
They recorded what they saw (“as it existed”) in a dispassionate manner.

The public was outraged by Social Realism, in part, because they didn’t know how to look at it or what to do with it. [wiki]

I did this look because I feel it is appropriate with the times. 🎨

From a sociological perspective, our early experiences deeply shape how we navigate the world, no matter how powerful we become. I chose Tatsumaki because she has green eyes, but I’ve come to understand that she perfectly embodies this journey of silencing past hurts while healthily integrating her childhood self into her adult identity.

She’s incredibly strong and ambitious, yet her intense volatility stems from a deep sensitivity and the unique social isolation of her upbringing and powers. Throughout the show, she learns to master her emotions by building trust within her nascent social circle and accepting their honest critiques.

this reminds me that even for the most brilliant and powerful individuals, the emotional “tools” forged in childhood remain fundamental. They’re not weaknesses to be discarded, but rather core elements that, through social interaction and self-awareness, we can continuously remaster and integrate into a more complete sense of self. taken in Worldwide by @loryn.jackson

The folks making decisions don’t always know what the audiences will connect with, that’s why WE have to be the ones to show up and show them what is possible! Wild, different, free, colorful, sometimes bland, and ALWAYS true.
The industry changes because actors keep showing it something it didn’t know it needed. by @loryn.jackson

I love the acting, the lighting, the cinematography, the writing….i just don’t know what it is! 🤔

Have you ever felt like you missed the hype on something that most people view as a masterpiece?

I have one other in mind but I’ll hold my tongue to see if you feel the same way. 😂😂😂 by @loryn.jackson

Not everyone will relate to this, but if you’ve ever been underestimated because of how you look or your age, you know exactly what she’s talking about.

Why does beauty equate non-intelligence/naïvity? Why does youth equate lack of skill?

My story: This is just something I’ve noticed as I was loooking for work for more prestigious positions, would be invited to the interview, and would be offered a less prestigious position that I didn’t apply for….and this happened BEFORE THE INTERVIEW STARTED😂
Talk about underestimating.

I turned down each one and other employers didn’t like that I wasn’t accepting what they were giving to me. I may be kind, I may naïve at times, but I know things. by @loryn.jackson

What's one rejection that ended up making you stronger?

My story: casting is bout alignment, not only talent. I’ve experienced moments where I was booked and even arrived on set, only to be replaced because my look didn’t align with the company’s vision. The industry can be complex. For example, sometimes you’re not what they’re looking for, and other times you stand out in a way that doesn’t fit the brand’s idea of “relatable.”

Btw, for every brush stroke before your call time, every grin after a rejection … your survival in this industry is shaping your character. 💃🏾

Quick quesh: has anyone else noticed minimalism tends to pop up during economic uncertainty? 👀

*coughs in Great Depression*

1920s → 1960s revival → 1990s → 2020s… here we go again.

From the Great Depression, to post-war eras, to now: simplicity becomes the aesthetic.

From “clean girl” (an aesthetic heavily influenced by working-class Latine beauty practices) to “quiet luxury” (wealth signaling that says “I have money, but don’t look at me”)…

Are we seeing a pattern? Or am I just side-eyeing the economy? Am I broke or am I just a minimalist 👁️ by @loryn.jackson
