πŸ“£ NEGOTIATING FOR CLIMATE JUSTICE: GENEVIEVE JIVA OF FIJI πŸ‡«πŸ‡― 🌊 Compromises in international negotiations often leave delegates feeling dissatisfied. πŸ“œ Yet, participating remains essential as frontline communities face increasingly severe climate impacts. πŸ•ŠοΈ 🌴 Being far from home brings real homesickness, especially missing local cuisine such as Fijian curry. 🍲 Returning home can be the best part of traveling for climate talks. 🌺 βš–οΈ Staying determined despite slow progress is crucial to secure ambitious climate outcomes. ✊ Holding the line ensures national implementation connects directly with international climate ambition. 🀝 πŸ“ This message is especially timely during #PreCOP, taking place this week in Fiji and Tuvalu. πŸ‡«πŸ‡―πŸ‡ΉπŸ‡» Pacific leadership remains central to advancing justice. 🌏 πŸ—£οΈ We caught up with Fijian negotiator Genevieve Jiva during the June Climate Meetings (SB64), in Bonn, Germany. πŸ—ΊοΈ πŸ’¬ Here’s what she had to say. πŸ“œ πŸ”— Access our ongoing short film series on Global Majority negotiator profiles here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLI2LK12nq5em449PakyHD0h5cOTDz4B6g by @lossanddamagecollaboration
πŸŒ… A NEW LOOK FOR THE ROAD AHEAD πŸŽ‰ βš–οΈ Tackling #LossAndDamage was never going to happen through a single negotiation room. 🧩 It demands radical collaboration, systemic change, and a mosaic of solutions across movements. 🌍 πŸ›οΈ While our work inside @unclimatechange continues, real progress depends on organising beyond it: bringing activists, researchers, policy-makers, and lawyers together to confront entrenched power and build practical alternatives. ✊ ✨ Our visual identity has evolved to match that ambition, but our commitment to our community remains identical: pushing relentlessly for a just world where communities, other species, and ecosystems can truly thrive on a healthy planet. 🌿 β˜€οΈ We’re still the L&DC you know. And our commitment to you, our community, is to keep pushing further together. 🀝 πŸ”— Explore our mission, principles, and evolving work: https://www.lossanddamagecollaboration.org. πŸš€ by @lossanddamagecollaboration
πŸ“£ NEGOTIATING FOR CLIMATE JUSTICE: KIRSTEN MADDISON πŸ‡²πŸ‡ 🌊 Many frontline negotiators carry the trauma of experiencing severe climate devastation firsthand. πŸŒ€ Evacuating from a king tide at age ten deeply impacted Kirsten’s life. 🌴 In the Marshall Islands, communities expect real, tangible outcomes from international talks. πŸ›Ά They embody the value of "Wa Kuk Wa Jimor," meaning one community, one canoe. 🀝 βš–οΈ It is hard not to question the expense of talks when immediate results are lacking. ✊ Yet, she persists because this process remains a matter of survival for her family. ⏳ πŸ—£οΈ We caught up with Marshallese negotiator Kirsten Maddison during the June Climate Meetings (#SB64) in #Bonn, Germany. πŸ—ΊοΈ πŸ’¬ Here’s what she had to say. πŸ“œ πŸ”— Access our ongoing short film series on Global Majority negotiator profiles here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLI2LK12nq5em449PakyHD0h5cOTDz4B6g by @lossanddamagecollaboration
πŸ“£ WHAT WE NEED FROM COP 31 ON LOSS AND DAMAGE πŸŒͺ️ πŸ‡ΉπŸ‡· The 31st Conference of the Parties (#COP31) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) is taking place from 9–20 November 2026 in Antalya, TΓΌrkiye. πŸ“ We will be on the ground throughout to advocate for climate justice. 🌍 ✊ We have expectations - read them here: https://www.lossanddamagecollaboration.org/resources/key-messages-on-loss-and-damage-for-the-thirty-first-conference-of-parties-cop-31 🚨 Decades of inaction have thrust frontline communities into an era of severe devastation. πŸ›οΈ Developed countries can mobilise 6.6 trillion USD annually to fund climate action so all can thrive. 🌍 πŸ“œ On #LossAndDamage, delegates will consider the joint annual report of the Executive Committee of the Warsaw International Mechanism (WIM) and the Santiago Network, and provide guidance to the Fund for Responding to Loss and Damage (FRLD). πŸ›οΈ βš–οΈ Loss and Damage must be embedded as the third pillar of climate action across all #UNFCCC discussions. πŸ’° Developed countries must provide predictable, grant-based finance, replenishing the FRLD with 400 billion USD annually. πŸ’Έ πŸ“œ Parties must translate the International Court of Justice Advisory Opinion into legally grounded accountability for climate harm. πŸ’Ž πŸ”¬ Action must reflect science, 1.5Β°C limits, and Indigenous knowledge systems. πŸ“Š The second Global Stocktake must highlight developing countries' annual Loss and Damage finance needs of 724.43 USD billion. 🌿 πŸ”— Find relevant COP 31 documents here: https://unfccc.int/event/cop-31 πŸ“² We will be posting daily updates covering negotiations, side-events, and key discussions. πŸ›οΈ Follow our channels to hear the frontline stories roaming the summit halls. πŸ“’ by @lossanddamagecollaboration
πŸ“ˆ THE MYTH OF GREEN GROWTH πŸ“‰ 🌍 Systems change requires abandoning the growth imperative and moving beyond GDP. πŸ“– Read our paper to discover regenerative alternatives: https://www.lossanddamagecollaboration.org/systems-change 🌱 "Green growth" is empirically impossible, as Gross Domestic Product cannot decouple from resource extraction, material throughput, and carbon emissions. πŸ”„ Models like Doughnut Economics, degrowth, and the Foundational Economy prioritise well-being. 🍩 πŸ›οΈ Developed countries must organise a planned contraction of resource consumption, freeing ecological space for the Global Majority. βš–οΈ This transition protects public services, universal security, and collective health. πŸ›‘οΈ 🚫 Structural reforms must abolish debt-based currency, end shareholder primacy, and cap resource extraction. πŸ“’ Banning consumerist advertising and dark patterns will further curb hyperconsumption. 🚫 ✊ Demand deep systems change through non-violent mass mobilisation, democratic assemblies, and collective action. πŸ“£ Join us to build a regenerative, distributive, and just post-growth world. 🟒 by @lossanddamagecollaboration
βš–οΈ REPARATIVE JUSTICE FOR SYSTEMIC TRANSFORMATION 🌍 πŸ“œ Our latest systems change analysis examines how radical structural transformation must emphasise reparations for past and ongoing harms: https://www.lossanddamagecollaboration.org/systems-change. πŸ›οΈ πŸ›‘οΈ Under international human rights law, victims of systemic human rights violations hold an undeniable right to remedy. βš–οΈ Reparations address these harms through compensation, restitution, rehabilitation, satisfaction, and guarantees of non-recurrence. πŸ•ŠοΈ 🌐 This right to remedy extends across historical harms that created ecological overshoot and social shortfalls, including colonisation, the transatlantic slave trade, Indigenous dispossession, resource extraction, and hashtag#LossAndDamage. 🌿 πŸ’° Perpetrators of the transatlantic slave trade owe between 100 trillion and 131 trillion USD. ⏳ High-emitting countries owe 192 trillion USD for atmospheric appropriation, alongside hundreds of trillions more for future loss and damage. πŸ’Έ 🀝 Rather than punishment, reparatory justice represents an acknowledgement of shared responsibility and an opportunity to dismantle extractive systems. 🌱 Future-oriented reparations can reallocate resources and capabilities to rebuild global political and economic systems for everyone. 🧩 πŸ“Š Structural changes like tax justice can halt trillions of dollars in illicit financial flows each year. πŸͺ™ These resources can be redirected towards addressing ecological overshoot, social shortfalls, and frontline community needs globally. ✨ by @lossanddamagecollaboration
πŸ“£ TALKING BIODIVERSITY, LOSS AND DAMAGE, AND LAW IN YEREVAN πŸ‡¦πŸ‡² πŸ“ Heidi White, the lead of our new International Law and #LossAndDamage Initiative, writes from Yerevan, #Armenia, where she is attending the UN Biodiversity Conference: #COP17. 🌿 πŸ“ Writing as delegates move into the second week of negotiations, Heidi talks about exploring the international legal system beyond the @unclimatechange Convention and its Paris Agreement. 🌐 πŸ”— Read her reflections here: https://www.lossanddamagecollaboration.org/resources/talking-biodiversity-loss-and-damage-and-law-at-the-un-biodiversity-conference-in-yerevan-armenia 🎯 Her mission? ✊ Understanding how international law can be best used in the fight for climate justice–ensuring that there is accountability and adequate remedies for people, other species, and ecosystems harmed by the #ClimateCrisis. πŸ›‘οΈ πŸ’‘ Her inspiration? πŸ›οΈ The International Court of Justice Advisory Opinion on the obligations of States in respect of Climate Change, the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea Advisory Opinion on climate change and international law, and the global surge in transboundary and domestic litigation enforcing accountability and liability for climate harms. βš–οΈ by @lossanddamagecollaboration
πŸ“£ WORK TO LIVE OR LIVE TO WORK 🧰 🌍 Real systems change requires rethinking the growth imperative and reclaiming our time. πŸ“– Read our new systems change paper: https://www.lossanddamagecollaboration.org/systems-change ⏳ 🧘 Shortening working hours without pay cuts reduces stress, enhances productivity, and boosts mental health. πŸ›Œ Reclaimed time restores vital sleep, daily exercise, and invaluable moments with family. πŸ“‰ Reducing working time by 25 per cent cuts carbon emissions by 20 per cent. 🌱 It shrinks our ecological footprint by 30.2 per cent, directly curbing planetary overshoot. 🌎 βš–οΈ Shorter working days help rebalance unpaid domestic labour, childcare, and elderly care between genders. 🀝 Freeing daily time enables a fairer distribution of caregiving responsibilities. 🏑 🚲 More free time empowers sustainable lifestyles through cycling, repairing goods, and mutual community aid. πŸ“£ Join the movement for #SystemsChange to build an equitable, caring, and regenerative future. ✨ by @lossanddamagecollaboration

πŸ“£ LESSONS FROM THE MONTREAL PROTOCOL: A BLUEPRINT FOR SUCCESS ✊ πŸ”— Explore the crucial lessons the Montreal Protocol offers for driving systems change to end loss and damage as we head to @turkiyecop31 by reading Teo-Ormond Skeaping’s new blog post here: https://www.lossanddamagecollaboration.org/resources/what-can-we-learn-about-driving-systems-change-from-the-montreal-protocol πŸ“– 🌍 We have powerful historical precedents for global change. 🀝 The Montreal Protocol united countries to phase out harmful ozone depleting substances, putting the ozone layer on track to fully recover by 2066. ✨ ⚑️ Rapid multilateral action is possible. ⏱️ Once scientists identified ozone depletion, governments moved swiftly to adopt legally binding agreements, proving that urgent international policy action can successfully protect Earth’s human and more-than-human beings. πŸš€ πŸ›οΈ Ambitious leadership breaks diplomatic paralysis. U.S. leadership proved pivotal in 1987. 🌐 Today, high-ambition plurilateral coalitions can trigger crucial political tipping points to confront entrenched corporate interests. 🀝 ✊ Mobilised civil society drives systemic transformation. πŸ“£ Sustained public campaigns pressured hesitant governments and corporate chemical giants, proving that collective grassroots organising is vital to overcome powerful industry resistance. 🌿 πŸ’° Dedicated, equitable finance unlocks universal compliance. βš–οΈ The treaty’s Multilateral Fund successfully obliged developed countries to finance the transition in the Global Majority, proving that wealthy states can (and must!) pay their fair share. πŸ’Έ βš–οΈEquity-promoting provisions facilitate cooperation between developed and developing nations and promote shared responsibility recognising structural imbalances in power, resources, and capabilities. Different timelines for developed and developing countries allowed flexibility to develop national phase-out commitments. 🧩This blog is the latest output of our Systems Change workstream. πŸ“£ NEGOTIATING FOR CLIMATE JUSTICE: IDY NIANG OF SENEGAL πŸ‡ΈπŸ‡³ πŸŒ€ The failure of COP 15 in Copenhagen was a deep shock that left negotiators crying in the plenaries, making them question the utility of the multilateral process. 🌴 In Senegal, communities expect real, tangible outcomes from international climate action. βš’οΈ They need measures that truly impact the population and benefit local communities. βš–οΈ It is hard not to question leaving home for weeks when discussions feel endless. ✊ Yet, Global Majority negotiators persist because serving their communities and achieving peace remains an ultimate duty. πŸ—£οΈ We caught up with Senegalese negotiator Idy Niang during the June Climate Meetings (#SB64) in #Bonn, Germany. πŸ’¬ Here’s what he had to say. πŸ”— Access our ongoing short film series on Global Majority negotiator profiles here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLI2LK12nq5em449PakyHD0h5cOTDz4B6g by @lossanddamagecollaboration
πŸ“£ FROM DOMINANCE TO KINSHIP ✨ 🌍 Radical systems change is urgently needed to halt ecological overshoot, address social shortfalls, and secure climate justice. πŸ“– Read the full paper online here: https://www.lossanddamagecollaboration.org/systems-change 🌿 πŸ’₯ Global North worldviews justifying human dominance over nature have driven planetary breakdown and forcibly displaced Indigenous communities. 🌱 We must transition to stewardship, kinship, and ancestral ecological wisdom. 🦊 πŸ‚ Kinship treats animals, plants, and rivers as extended family members rather than resources. 🀝 Reciprocity requires that humanity honours natural gifts, respects ancestors, and protects ecosystems. 🌲 🏞️ Returning land to Indigenous stewardship can help heal colonial trauma, restore ancestral knowledge, and safeguard biodiversity. βš–οΈ Granting legal rights to more-than-humans, rivers, and forests guarantees lasting ecological protection πŸ“œ ✊ Join non-violent movements to demand reparatory justice, dismantle oppressive structures, and champion systems change. πŸ“’ Act today to honour living ancestors, protect future generations, and restore balance 🌎 by @lossanddamagecollaboration
