One of my favorite memories from touring with @thegardenconservancy was visiting @lossingmanor, easily one of my favorite gardens I’ve seen in a long time. A garden that completely captivated me with its extraordinary sense of rhythm. The repetition of color, the thoughtful placement of architectural elements, and the beautiful balance between structure and abundance made every turn feel like a perfectly composed picture.

The garden was positively alive, and very few things are more satisfying than watching great sweeps of planting gently sway in the summer breeze. In some ways, a beekeeper’s dream garden…..buzzing with life and seemingly in constant motion.

There is something so satisfying about a garden that feels both meticulously considered and entirely effortless. And what a perfect day for it all, blue skies, billowing clouds, and the garden at the height of its summer glory. I could have wandered for hours.

Take me back! If only summer could have lasted a little longer. by @lossingmanor

From Baden-Baden to bad housekeeping…

I haven’t tidied my truck bed after landscaping chores and cleaning the roadside. Looking like a Jeff Foxworthy joke…

90 years ago and before at Baden-Baden. The season had wound down and one could take an afternoon walk—and no luncheon guest of my grandparents ever escaped that hike—and find a farmer with oxen team on the immediate outskirts of the spa. My grandfather Federico Gulda-Rauschenplat on the terrace at Brenners Park Hotel about to utter a jest or exclaim “ecolo!” In response to someone’s bon mot. The Edwardian era of his childhood was a time when it wasn’t unusual to be fluent in many languages, five in his case, unaccented, and not counting classical Greek and Latin. With the farmer, great grandmothers Ellen Frances Abely, Louise von Rauschenplat Gulda, and grandmother Alice. Great-grandfather Friedrich August Emmanuel Gulda looking very burgerlich around 1912, dressed in the English fashion with bowler as was then smart. Prince August-William, friend and golf partner, allowed my mother Louise to call him Onkel Auwi and when once asked by an all-too-direct American as to who he was answered, “Little Lulu’s swimming instructor”.
Before the Great War, Baden-Baden was sometimes called “Europe’s Summer Capital” because rulers and their courts congregated there to take the waters and enjoy a rarified social life; prosperous merchant families followed in the hope of finding noble matches for their children. Tea dances were a thing, by the 1930s featuring a daring innovation: jazz.

A lucky auction find, an unusually small Edwardian coal grate that fits the hearth in the false fireplace and chimney breast we designed to hide the 21st century banalities of TV and electronics. The fireplace screen was another serendipitously sized piece from @twgibb and @robertkeithlindgren

I do worry that some houseguest, feeling chilly, will want to light a cheery blaze. I wouldn’t miss the computer gear but I would miss the house.

From wickets to waves…

Younger privets were finally growing in, very bushy and getting high. Some garden-rooming wanted, yes, but a complete view-block wasn’t in the plan. Was mulling options to create view windows, including crenellations, apses or waves. @gardencowboy has an unerring eye and pointed out that waves would echo the contours of our hill and those of the valley behind, then calculated heights and lengths. Ed studied art & design while playing college football, then apprenticed with a landscape designer for the hands on, choosing ultimately to focus on topiary and trees. Experience and an aesthetic gift is how Ed has enhanced one garden after another, including work for Oscar de la Renta and @bunnys_eye and @clovebrookfarm and why he is featured @marthastewartblog and beyond.

(And that was a very enjoyable evening organized by Lillian and Bob Chapman with Mrs M serving as coach and line judge.)

The Yale of old.

They would say, “Your mother is right: after graduation from school, the nicest boys do go to Harvard…

The men go to Yale.”

Harvard had their jibes in return.

Some fraternal members of Yale Class of 1900, with FHR far right.
