LMAS need you ! 🙋🏽‍♀️🙋🏻‍♀️ After two years of working on the floors, on the move and from the backpacks we have been graced with an amazing opportunity by @centreculturel_lechateau in Saint-Louis to set up an archiving studio, where we can finally have our Headquarters for some time. The aim is to have a space where to digitise thousands of negatives we have received from photographers around Senegal and also to have an open doors to local creative youths interested in archiving and Senegal’s photographic heritage. Before doing anything internationally we prioritise connecting on a local level and organise more fun events in the country to further promote and value the work of unknown photographers of Senegal. For now we really need your donations for our space. 🪑furniture, shelving, drawers, lamps etc 💻💿 Any tech regarding scanning/photography 📚 Books on photography (especially African photography) as we wish to build an open library for visitors to be able to browse and be inspired DM and please share 🙏 📸 by Demba Sarr by @lost_memory_archive_senegal_

📍 Djibélor Baraff, Casamance, Sénégal 📷 Alfousseyni Mané, dit Weuz #LMAS #LostMemoryArchiveSenegal #archive #Casamance by @lost_memory_archive_senegal_

A little gem from recent Demba Sarr’s box, and how we found it ! #dembasarr #senegalsphotography by @lost_memory_archive_senegal_
Photographs that could have been… During our recent trip to Matam, Demba Sarr gave us a bag full of black-and-white prints and medium-format negatives documenting life along the Fouta River. Unfortunately, like many photographers we’ve encountered, Demba did not have access to proper archival storage, and the photographs had been kept in a damp box. Much of the material is now beyond salvage. Yet digitising these images remains an important task: to preserve what we can, to see what could have been, and to understand the urgency of our work. So much of Senegal’s photographic heritage is being lost to mould, and with it, fragments of histories that can never be recovered. #archives #africanphotography by @lost_memory_archive_senegal_
A photograph of his wife - Alfousseyni Mané aka Weuz, Zinguichor 90’s by @lost_memory_archive_senegal_
Last year when doing a research trip in Zinguichor, Casamance, we’ve met a group of photographers working in a Labo Vision Studio. A rare sight these days, a fully functioning photo studio, hosting 4 photographers from different generations. One of the younger ones was Alfousseyni Mané, also known as Weuz. LMAS usually works with elder photographers who are currently in their 80’s, however Weuz presented us with a big block of photographs he has gathered throughout the 90’s - mostly of his beloved wife or sometimes, his wife turning back the lense and taking photos of Weuz himself. We still unsure what to do with these, but we feel they are so beautiful and the love for his wife is shinning right through them, shall we expose them ? What do you guys think 🤔? We are returning back to the office as the rainy season is stubbornly leaving us in the city of Saint-Louis. Our hosts @centreculturel_lechateau are putting on an open studio day where you can come visit the building and learn about the projects that it houses, including ours ! We will be around all day 🏘️ 📸 by Demba Sarr by @lost_memory_archive_senegal_
Demba Sarr’s limited-edition prints, beautifully framed and now part of a wonderful collection in Dakar. 💚 A big shout-out to Marienne & Luc, who have been loyal supporters, advisers, hosts and friends from the very beginning. No project exists in isolation - it is the people who believe in it, support it and help it grow that make it possible to flourish !! - Would you like to get a print & support a great cause too ? by @lost_memory_archive_senegal_
