POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Just a yew I dug up from some landscaping 3 years ago. I’ve been trying to get it healthy enough and prepared to completely crush it down on itself. I brought it to study with @dogwoodstudiosbonsai and we made a plan. A hollow channel and some structural and moral support and it’s a new tree. Let’s see what happens in spring. taken in Timberwinds Nursery by @lost_time_workshop

Here is another batch of photos that I took while attending the 2026 Spring Bonsai Show hosted by the Bonsai Society of Greater St. Louis ( @bonsaisocietyofstlouis ). This is the sixth post in a multi-post series from this event.

This post documents a fun Golden Hinoki Cypress display that was submitted by Brian McMurray ( @lost_time_workshop ). Below are some of the details about the display:

Tree: Golden Hinoki Cypress (Chamaecyparis obtuse ‘Nana Lutea’)

Age: Unknown

Years in Training: 3 Years

Ceramic: Japanese Nanban

Stand: Brian McMurray

Accent: Pinguicula emarginata x juamavensis (carnivorous)

Here is a direct quote from Brain about his display:

“I found this tree at Timberwinds nursery in June of ‘23 and was attracted to it and a little apprehensive due my lack of knowledge or experience with Hinoki. With the help of Tyler Sherrod, including a pep talk and help starting a plan, I started by cutting back unnecessary elements, setting branches and prepping for next spring’s repot. I forgot to introduce you. This is Betty. The next year Betty got a new pot and some root work and more styling updates with a focus on trying to get her first branch heading Where I want it and building an apex. By now, she is in a new pot brought back from my first trip to Japan. She is filling in nicely and on her way to just getting better.”

Brian fabricated the stand from a automotive rotor as well as the oxidized metal screen in the background. He is a very talented metal fabricator. Enjoy the photos!

This was my first display. This is Betty, the golden Hinoki. I’ve been working on her the last 3 years. Our @bonsaisocietyofstlouis spring bonsai show is over for this year. @bonsai_central will be held the same weekend next year. Thanks to @bonsaisocietyofstlouis for helping me with my bonsai learning curve. Displaying is not the final goal of my bonsai but it is nice to share my work with those who also share their hard work. taken in Greensfelder Recreation Complex at Queeny Park by @lost_time_workshop

St Louis Bonsai. Next Saturday! Come see some huge little trees. It’s free. And I’m showing a tree for the first time. There will be trees from a variety of species and levels of refinement. We will even have a small vendor area if you’re interested. This is kinda a practice run for a bigger show under the Bonsai Central name next year. Come see what all these weirdos are excited about. taken in Greensfelder Recreation Complex at Queeny Park by @lost_time_workshop

Red Maple-1 Native Red Maple collected late winter ‘24. This thing wants to thrive so bad. I cut it back for the last push before dormancy. Continued work for bifurcation and a bit of carving and this tree is on its way. I’ll need to find a proper oval pot before repotting season next year. The things these little, or big, trees survive through is inspiring. #bonsai #redmaple #yamadori #missourinativetrees by @lost_time_workshop
