Okay, this one got me. 😭

I’ll admit, All the Colours of the Dark and I didn’t have the easiest start. I found it a little hard to get into at first and, after about the first quarter, I actually put it down for a while and finished another book instead. BUT… I’d heard so many amazing things and I wasn’t ready to give up. So I picked it back up, gave myself the time to sit down and read a decent chunk in one go (sometimes I think that’s the trick with longer books!) and I am so glad I did.

Because somewhere along the way, I went from struggling to get into it to being completely wrapped up in the lives of Patch, Saint, Misty, Charlotte, Nix, Norma, Mrs Meyer and Sammy.

And the characters really are what made this book for me. The more time I spent with them, the more I loved them to the point where I genuinely don’t think I could choose a favourite. They were all charming in their own ways…. Patch, the outcast turned unlikely hero, with his fierce loyalty and relentless need for justice. Charlotte and all of her teenage angst. And Sammy… 😂 gruff, foul-mouthed, artistic Sammy, who underneath it all is such a genuine friend and mentor. They’re flawed and complicated and thats what i loved about them.

It spans decades and follows these characters through trauma, obsession, friendship, love, loyalty, loss and the choices that shape their lives.
I loved some of the more descriptive writing too, particularly later in the book. Having never been to the American South, I loved being transported through all these different towns and places alongside the characters. The pacing was definitely a little quirky. There were moments where it slowed right down and others where suddenly SO much was happening at once that I wasn’t entirely sure what was going on 😅 but stick with it, thats what makes it so engaging. And then came the tears. 😭🤦🏼‍♀️

I really don’t cry at books very often, but this one properly got me. By that point, i was way more invested than i realised! 🤦🏼‍♀️😅 I finished this one, closed it and thought Wow! That was one hell of a story. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #booksta #bookstagram #bookstagramuk🇬🇧 #allthecoloursofthedark #bookreccomendation taken in United Kingdom by @lostintheplot_x

Hey! 👋 Bookstagram 📚

Well… I finally did it!

I’ve been wanting to make a little corner of the internet for books for ages, and after an unexpected trip to the bookshop, apparently today was the day!

Expect current reads, recommendations, books I loved, books I absolutely did not! far too many trips to cute cafés and bookshops to count, and an ever-growing TBR that I’ll inevitably keep adding to.

I’m very new around here, so come and say hi 👋🏼 And while you’re here, I need to know… what’s one book you wish you could completely forget just so you could experience reading it for the first time all over again?

Because apparently my TBR isn’t long enough already 😂📚 #Bookstagram #BookstagramUK #booksbooksbooks #Bookworm #bookrecommendation taken in United Kingdom by @lostintheplot_x

I really wanted The Bright Years to be a five-star read for me… ⭐️⭐️⭐️✨ {3.75}

Sarah Damoff has written an incredible story and I really enjoyed the way it is told in three parts, each from a different family members perspective. It’s a moving story about family, love, grief, alcoholism and forgiveness, and I can absolutely see why it has meant so much to so many readers.

For me, though, it fell slightly short of that 5 star wow factor I was hoping for… it started a little slow and took me quite a while to get into. I’m also usually a very emotional reader, but I didn’t feel as connected to the characters, or as moved by the story as I expected to. I sometimes found the writing a little detached, especially around a certain scene about midway through (trying not include any spoilers) that perhaps, I felt should have been much more emotive, which made it harder for me to fully lose myself in the book I think.

I still very much liked this book, and overall I would recommend reading it, even if it didn’t quite become the five-star favourite for me that it has been for so many others. 💛

What did you think of The Bright Years? Did you feel close to the characters, or did you find yourself wishing for a stronger emotional connection too? 🥰✨🫶🤍 taken in BOOKSTA by @lostintheplot_x

When I first started The Nightingale, I’ll admit I was a little sceptical. I remember thinking, “Hmm… maybe this one isn’t quite for me.” It felt slightly outside my comfort zone, but it had so many amazing reviews that I decided to persevere, I’m so glad I did!

I honestly don’t quite know where to start with this book. It was such a powerful read, but also a really tough one, so it took me a little longer to get through than usual. There were definitely moments when I needed to put it down, take a breath and come back to it.

It was heartbreaking, beautifully written and incredibly emotional - basically, prepare to feel ALL the emotions because this book absolutely broke my heart. But it’s also a story that needed to be told, and what a telling it was.

I especially loved the contrast between sisters Vianne and Isabelle. They’re so different in the way they respond to everything happening around them, and I loved following the different choices and paths they took. Their story explores love, sacrifice, bravery family loyalty and the incredible resilience of women during the war.

I also really liked seeing how Isabelle’s courage and defiance seemed to rub off on Vianne as the story went on. And without giving too much away, I absolutely loved the ending in Paris. 🥹 It brought everything together so beautifully. I think this book should be mandatory reading and it’s not one you will easily forget. This book left me feeling incredibly proud of the unwavering bravery and resilience women have carried throughout history . #thenightingale #kristinhannah #emotionalread #bookrecommendation

So which one do I read next ? These are the four Kristin Hannah books I currently own, although The Great Alone is also on its way… so which one do you guys think ?👀

I definitely need something a little more light-hearted first, though - or perhaps a really fast-paced thriller to re calibrate my emotions! 😂

Have you read The Nightingale? Did it completely break your heart too? 🤍🩷🧡💜 #whichbooknext taken in BOOKSTA by @lostintheplot_x

The Mountains Sing was actually the first book I finished after starting this Bookstagram account, the book that made me actually want to start the account and one of the very first books I posted about here about a month ago. At the time I’d read it on Kindle, didn’t have a physical copy yet, and this little page was very new… so I felt like it didn’t get the moment it deserved!

Fast-forward a few weeks and, thanks to Vinted 😂, I finally have a beautiful physical copy and honestly, if there was ever a book I wanted to come back and shout about properly, it’s this one.
This book moved me so much. SWIPE for my review. :) have you read this one ? Desperate to know what others thought of it?

The Mountains Sing is a sweeping, multigenerational story about one Vietnamese family trying to survive decades of upheaval. It moves between Huong, a young girl growing up in Ha Noi during the Vietnam War, and her grandmother Dieu Lan, who slowly tells her the story of the family’s past - of losing their home, fleeing during the Land Reform, being separated from loved ones, surviving famine, war and political violence, and trying again and again to find their way back to one another. What makes it so powerful is that all of that history is told through one family. You’re not just reading about events from a distance you’re completely immersed in how vietnams history has affected marriages, parents, children, siblings, homes, loyalties and identities. The author has said she wanted each member of the family to bear witness to a different part of Vietnams complicated history, and that intention really comes through. And despite how heartbreaking parts of it are, it never felt like a book purely about suffering to me. It is also about hope, survival, the resilience of women, the stories families pass down, the way culture survives through food, language, memories and tradition, and the enormous amount of hope and tenderness people somehow hold onto even after everything they’ve endured. The novel is deliberately centred on the Vietnamese experience of the war and its aftermath, which was one of the things I found most eye-opening about it.

By the end, i gasped and just sat w Holding the historical fiction book the mountains sing taken in BOOKSTA by @lostintheplot_x

So I started The Nightingale last week and I’m really enjoying it, so I had absolutely no intention of starting anything else yet. I’m usually very much a one-book-at-a-time kinda girl and need to finish what I’m reading before I even think about picking something else up. 😂

But after my last post, so many of you left amazing comments about The Bright Years and so I was even more curious about it. 🤦🏼‍♀️😅

… it was just sitting downstairs, and I had a few minutes to spare in between working and lunch… so I thought I’d pick it up and read the first few pages, just to see what it was like.

Well… that was three chapters ago. 🤦🏼‍♀️📚

So apparently I’ve become a two-books-at-once kind of girl now.

I’m still really, really enjoying The Nightingale and definitely going to be reading it again this evening, but The Bright Years has already completely pulled me in too, so I think I’m just going to let myself read whichever one I’m in the mood for and see how that goes. 🤣🤦🏼‍♀️🤞🥰
Is this what they mean by mood reading? 😂 (Sorry, still fairly new around here!) Are you strictly one book at a time, or are you partial to two… or three? 🤍📖 #bookstagram #moodreader #thebrightyears #booksta #bookish taken in BOOKSTA by @lostintheplot_x

Just a little destash here! Who else donates their books to the charity shops? I do buy new books as well but I feel I use charity shops myself so much that it’s only fair to donate back! Unfortunately no 5 star reads here from me - any for you ? :) #bookstagramuk #bookstagrammer #booksta #books #bookfriends taken in BOOKSTA by @lostintheplot_x

September hopefuls 📚🍂

I’ve put together a little stack of the books I’m most hoping to get to this month… although let’s be honest, I’m fully aware I probably won’t make it through all of them 😂

I’ve just started The Nightingale, so one of these will be next - I’m just not quite sure which yet. However, it will most likely be The Bright Years! :))

Which one would you pick first? 👀📖

Back for part two of my 11 book charity shop book haul last week! Sorry it took me a little while to get up (I suddenly had quite a few orders come in just before and over the bank holiday weekend which kept me fairly busy 😊🥰) but here it is! So I managed to pick up 11 books for around about £22 ish (like I obviously don’t have enough books already 🤦🏼‍♀️🤣) I’m still not massively comfortable chatting to the camera but hope you enjoy all the same. #bookstagram #booksta #bookfinds #bookhaul #bookfriends taken in BOOKSTA by @lostintheplot_x

Okay… I’ve made my choice 👀📚

After finishing One of the Girls by Lucy Clarke, and getting SO many recommendations for The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah on my Friday flatlay, I’m starting it tonight.

I don’t think I’ve been this excited to start a book in ages 🥹

This will be my first Kristin Hannah and hoping it’s as good as everyone says, I have a feeling it will be ?! 💘💗🤞#kristinhannah #thenightingale #bookish #bookstagram #bookrecs📚 taken in BOOKSTA by @lostintheplot_x
