After a solid stint in Noosa with Bob McTavish and George Greenough, mastering their newly conceived “involvement” style, Nat blew away the likes of David Nuuhiwa and other stiff competition to win it on his Magic Sam board - surfcraft unlike anyone had seen before.

John “Wheels” Williams, 1957.

Bondi style guru, and among the first to tip off Sydney surfers north to Byron, where he told them the waves go “sideways all the way to the beach”.

Nat Young was found not guilty after a year long case about two bottles of cannabis oil police found in his Coolangatta hotel room. His defence was that they had simply appeared there, with no explanation of how.

He was arrested during the trip and denied the police claims that he’d brought the oil in from NSW and distributed it.

It’s said he got through the hard times during the trial partly by chanting the Hare Krishna mantra with Ted Spencer. He called the case “the greatest contest I’ve ever been in.”

Midget with an 8’ vee at Palm Beach , 1967.

Midget only made one of these vees. He rode it for five months or so before moving on to pintails.

Nat Young, Noosa ‘66

Here he enjoyed a training ground of endless peelers, before he quickly went on to win the World Surfing Championships in San Diego that same year. No one was doing it like him back then.

It’s very melancholic seeing this footage, to think of Noosa as it was back then, free of SUPs, foils and backpackers.

Baddy was Manly-raised, and hadn’t yet relocated to Angourie here. That classic section in MOTE was still a couple of years off.

Midget, 24 years old in the transitional era. Seemingly a world away from his image as the clean-cut competitor only a few years prior.

He never quite gets his due in the narrative that surrounds this New Era, overshadowed by Nat and others. By this point he was deep into his own experiments, that same year his Side-Slipper model went into production.
