POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
21st November at The Oak
46 St James Street, Kemptown, Brighton
Free entry

ChopChop play a kind of high energy artrock with frontman Xelís de Toro mixing angular frantic movements with yelped vocals, and the band pulling in wildly eclectic influences to form their own unique sound. They have drawn comparisons to Talking Heads and The Fall, but there are also nods to absurdist theatre thrown into the mix.

Beau Flies are a trio from Hastings featuring Otti Albietz, Haydn Ackerley and Colden Drystone - together they make music that veers from pummeling to twisty-turny to highly melodic, often within the space of a song. They’ve played all over southeast UK, the arctic circle (Varangen festival in Vadsø, Norway) and that London.

Slovenian trio Širom return to The Rose Hill after their sell-out show last year!

Tickets from the Rose Hill website: therosehill.co.uk

These three self-taught musicians ingeniously connect the dots between past and present – taking inspiration from avant-folk, free improvisation and various global music traditions.

“Širom fashion maximalist avant-garde soundscapes from antique acoustic instruments like the balafon and hurdy gurdy. Their artfully rootless roots music makes an impassioned statement both aesthetically and, more opaquely, politically too.”

— Uncut

“I got to finally catch Širom in their glory of home ground – outstanding.”

– Gilles Peterson, BBC6

“Beautiful, messy, playful, terrifying, sweet stuff – you never knew where they were going to go.”

– Jude Rogers, Guardian

Athina B
Named for a Brighton shipwreck and a fragment of a Slum of Legs lyric, Athina B are a band playing from the liminal spaces – capturing the sounds of twilight, halfway between dream and memory where birds are caught midflight, lit by a setting sun.

Helmed by local favourites YOU&TH and Rdyer, with occasional guests and passers through, they turn found sounds, layered violin, bells, polyrhythms, harps, chants and charms into semi-improvised paeans to time and life and joy.

With only a few performances to their name, they’ve already built a reputation for riveting performances and incredible on-stage chemistry. Not to be missed.

Our Ecomusicology Project open day on Saturday was such a blast! Part of the site-wide Stanmer Organics open day, it was a chance to show to the wider public what we've been working on the last few years, and we're very chuffed that it was met with such enthusiasm!

Thank you to everyone who came, listened and took part.

This short film gives a good overview of the smorgasbord of listening activities we had running across the day. Many thanks to Tim @shimmerglisten_ for putting this footage together!

Thanks also to @jamesfozfoster, @the_rose_hill @lostpropertycollective @buntylooping @tobyjoelc, Luke and Tao, @soundartbrighton for all their contributions.

We'll be doing it again next year around the same time, so put it in your diaries if you missed it this time! by @lostpropertycollective

Saturday 27 June, 7.30pm
Lewes Con Club

ChopChop with collaboration from visual artist Jim Sanders and filmmaker Prue Waller
+ Thimble
+ DJ Fiery Biscuits

After playing at Lewes Con Club six times as a support band, ChopChop are headlining there for the first time to celebrate 10 years of what Tom Robinson called the “life affirming noise” of a “wildly original band”, while others just define them as “completely bonkers music”.

To celebrate this special occasion as well as ChopChop favourites and new songs, the artist Jim Sanders who produced artwork for their latest record and t-shirts will lead an interactive collective drawing, and the filmmaker Prue Waller will project a film to accompany their iconic song Building a House.

Be sure to not miss Thimble - a rising 6-piece Brighton-based band known for their luscious, genre-bending blend of jazzy psychedelia and eastern folk, coming hot from their sold-out debut show at the Rose Hill earlier this year.

We would love to see you many of you there!

Lost Property and Hill Collective present:

Hill Collective

Hill Collective have garnered a reputation as one of the most exciting jazz ensembles in Brighton, combining tight playing and swinging compositions with a willingness to embrace chance and improvisation that takes them to places few others dare to go to!

------

Fergus Quill Plays Xero Slingsby

From spaghetti western mayhem to being likened to the magic of the Sun Ra Arkestra, Fergus Quill is one of the hottest acts in the English jazz scene at the moment, notably recently playing at Ronnie Scotts with his Imaginary Big Band whilst also playing an important part in the free jazz experimental punk scene of Leeds.

This time, Fergus graces our stage with a musical homage to the Leeds alt-jazz pioneer of the 1980s, alto saxophonist Xero Slingsby and his band The Works, celebrated for their unique brand of “no categories” improvised music which brought together their mutual love for jazz, punk, funk, and TV soundtracks, all tied up with a huge dose of northern working-class humour. Xero was also a prolific busker/street musician, who challenged every arrest and court appearance and became a one-man buskers’ rights champion. Big Issue magazine recently described him as "Yorkshire's Ornette Coleman" - https://www.bigissue.com/culture/music/xero-slingsby-music-british-jazz/

Fergus felt a kinship with Xero and wanted to make an album of his compositions as a homage to him but also to join the dots between the original Leeds alt-jazz pioneer and the vibrant DIY jazz/improvised music scene in the city today. With the blessing of Xero’s widow Sally Coe, Who kindly provided some of Xero’s original homemade instruments for the session, this project finally came to life in spring/summer 2023.

Lineup:
Fergus Quill - Bass
Bess Shooter- Alto Saxophone Electronics, Toys
Harvey Parkin-Christie - Saxophones/ Toys
Hamish Dixon - Noise/toys
Theo Goss - Drums taken in Brunswick Pub by @lostpropertycollective

Lost Property present a Saturday matinee gig at The Prince Albert on Saturday 4th April, 2-5pm
--------------
In their 13th year, with seven albums and countless gigs to their name, MAP 71 are a difficult band to define… art pop - post punk - electro - psychedelia? Powered by Lisa Jayne’s lyrics and vocal style and Andy Pyne’s drumming and electronics, one thing is certain: MAP 71 have evolved into something unique

Their amazing new album - The Feral Jinx - was recorded in the heat of summer 2025 and features studio recordings of pieces from recent MAP 71 live sets, plus two brand new compositions. The Feral Jinx veers away from their spoken-wave roots towards wordless vocals and structured soundscapes. Moving from darkly moody to euphoric, the album is less obviously confrontational, but still defiant and absolutely MAP 71. The Feral Jinx will be released in April 2026, and available from the merch table at the gig
