The Hills ⬇️

1. The bar should be on par with all the other little details. You wouldn’t hire a caterer who microwaves everything, so why settle for a bartender that’s a professional jack and coke mixer?

2. Nobody should spend cocktail hour in a bar line.

3. You don’t need 5 signature cocktails. 2 good ones done right beats 5 that back up the bar every time.

4. Cocktails on tap are a cheat code for any wedding day.

5. Your non-drinking guests deserve more than a Sprite. A real mocktail takes the same effort as a cocktail

6. Hire bartenders who work in the industry every day, not someone picking up a weekend gig.

7. Book your bar early. 12 months out isn’t too soon, the good dates go quickly.

It’s that I spent way more on alcohol than I needed to!! 🥃

When I first started I was doing promo events for free and buying all the alcohol myself, same as a client would. I had to overbuy, run low on the wrong stuff and haul a bunch of leftover cases home before I could figure out how much a crowd actually drinks.

I made a booze buying guide with everything I wish someone had given me when I started...

This industry runs on women. Planners, bartenders, coordinators, the people holding the whole night together while everyone else is having fun. Lost Sailor wouldn’t exist without them.

Massive shout out to @kimmoodydesign for giving me a chance and making Lost Sailor a preferred vendor at @estateatriverrun . Thank you to @dolcedarlingllc for always looking out with bookings. To @meadowscoevents for telling me what clients and planners actually want to see. @carter_sutton who I’ll be working with tonight, for bringing me on the team for a day.

These are just a few of the women I really respect who have shown me love in this industry. Hoping I get to work with a lot more of you down the road.

DO NOT be convinced that the only way to get a good cocktail at a wedding is to have it made to order.

That’s simply not true.

Here’s what actually works:

1️⃣ Ask your bar/catering service how they handle cocktail hour

Everyone walks out of the ceremony at the same time. If the answer is “we’ll just make them fast,” that’s your cue to keep looking. Same goes for pouring 150 drinks ahead of time and letting them sit out in the heat through the whole ceremony. Nobody wants a warm, watered down cocktail.

2️⃣ Look for cocktails that are ready before the wedding

We prep ingredients days ahead of events and batch cocktails in kegs, so the work’s done before the first guest shows up.

3️⃣ DRINKS ON TAP

Our teardrop 4-tap trailer pours cocktails the same way it pours beer. Pull the handle, next guest. Your people get back to the party instead of standing in line.

Every wedding has the same moment. Ceremony ends, everyone’s thirsty and fired up for bevs, they all hit the bar at once. That first 20 minutes decides how people feel about the whole night. Here’s what I changed 👇

1. I don’t shake cocktails one by one anymore 🍸
I shake at least 2 gallons at a time in a keg and pour it straight off the tap. The only difference? Guests get their drinks quicker and are back to their people

2. I start prepping weeks out 📋
Most slow bars aren’t slow because of the bartenders. They’re slow because something got figured out the day of. Juice, garnish, batches, all done ahead of time so on the day we’re just pouring

3. I bring way more ice than I think I need 🧊
Non negotiable. About 200lbs more. Outdoor wedding in July and your ice is gone by 8? Now somebody’s on a store run and the line’s backed up to the dance floor. Ice is cheap. Running out isn’t

4. I keep the team small and tight 🤝
More bartenders doesn’t mean faster. A couple of people who know the way each other move behind the bar is invaluable.

🧮 Figure out how many drinks you need (don’t worry, I got you). Rule of thumb is about 1 drink per guest per hour. 100 guests for 4 hours, plan on around 400 drinks.

🍺 Keep it simple. Beer, wine and 2 signature cocktails covers almost everybody. No need for a full liquor wall.

💸 Know what you’re getting. Some catering companies mark up alcohol as much as 300% over what you’d pay at the store. Not us. We’re selling you high end bar service, not a markup on bottles.

🍸 Find cocktails you love. As much as I loveee a good marg, there are so many amazing cocktails out there, so get creative. Go to your favorite cocktail bar and chat it up with the bartender.

🧊 Buy extra of the easy stuff. Beer and seltzers go faster than you think. Ask the store if they take back unopened bottles before you buy.

🥤 Don’t forget the non-drinkers. A good mocktail beats a can of soda every time.

Not to be dramatic, but buying your own alcohol for your wedding can save you thousands. 💸🍸

When you buy through a catering company, you’re paying big markups on every bottle. If you want it done right, you’ve got to do it yourself. 🍾
