As a photographer my favourite aperture for portraits is f/2.8. Soft background and subject sharp. From there I’m always adjusting shutter and ISO, keeping ISO as low as I can and shutter above 1/250 to keep the sharpness ☺️ Soft background or the whole scene in focus, which draws you in more? Save this if you’re planning a shoot and want this kind of look 📸 #portraitphotography #naturallightportrait #behindthecamera by @lotteelisec
1. Instead of: Auto Area AF → Try: Single Point AF Choose exactly what you want your camera to focus on. 2. Instead of: Using the same focus mode for everything → Try: AF-S for still subjects • AF-C for moving subjects You’ll get far more sharp photos. 3. Instead of: JPEG → Try: RAW You’ll have much more flexibility when editing. 4. Instead of: Guessing your exposure → Try: Use the histogram It’s the quickest way to know if your exposure is actually correct. 5. Instead of: Auto ISO all the time → Try: Keep your ISO as low as possible Less noise. Cleaner images. 6. Instead of: Looking only at your subject → Try: Check the background first A clean background instantly makes your subject stand out. 7. Instead of: Shooting everything at eye level → Try: Change your height A different perspective makes your photos more interesting. 8. Instead of: Zooming → Try: Move your feet You’ll change the perspective, not just the framing. 9. Instead of: Editing the colors first → Try: Adjust white balance first Everything else becomes much easier. 10. Instead of: Cropping to fix your composition → Try: Compose in-camera Crop to refine, not to rescue. #photography #photographytipsandtricks #photographer by @lotteelisec
Every photographer should try these at least once. 1. The 1-hour photowalk Take one photo every 5 minutes for an hour. Set an alarm if it helps. This trains your eye to spot interesting subjects quickly and improve your sense of composition. 2. One subject, 10 ways Choose one subject and photograph it 10 different ways. Change your angle, distance, depth of field, framing, or add movement. You might be surprised by how many possibilities there are, and it’s a great creativity exercise 🫶 3. Black & White Day Spend a day shooting only in black and white. It helps you notice light, contrast, texture, and shape in a completely different way. 4. Shoot in Manual If you’re a beginner, challenge yourself to shoot in Manual mode. It’s one of the fastest ways to understand how aperture, shutter speed, and ISO work together. 5. Recreate photos you love Recreating someone else’s style isn’t copying when you’re using it to learn. It’s about understanding why an image works so you can discover your own creative voice. Simplest way to understand your camera. Forget memorizing numbers. Just understand what each setting does: Aperture (f-stop) Lower number = more light + more blurry background Higher number = less light + more of your image in focus Shutter speed Lower number = more motion blur + more light Higher number = freezes movement + less light Image still too dark? Add ISO ISO Lower number = cleaner image + less light Higher number = brighter image + more noise Once you understand how these three work together, your camera starts making so much more sense. 1. Go for more walks. The more you slow down and observe, the more you’ll notice light, colours, shadows and little moments most people walk right past. My favourite (and probably slightly weird) thing to watch is trees. 2. Read more books. Photography isn’t just about making beautiful images. It’s about making people feel something. Stories teach you that. I find so much inspiration in poetry. 3. Watch films with curiosity. Instead of just following the plot, pay attention to the framing, the lighting and the colours. There’s inspiration everywhere. (If you’re easily distracted like me… I can’t guarantee you won’t miss parts of the plot. 😅) 4. Start journaling and self-reflecting. The better you understand your own thoughts and emotions, and whats actually important to you, the easier it becomes to create work that actually feels like you. 5. Spend time in nature. Nature also teaches patience. It reminds you that the best light can’t be rushed, and sometimes you just need to wait another 10 minutes. 6. People watch. Sit in a café, a park or on a train and simply observe. Great photography starts with noticing the little moments. 7. Draw or paint. You don’t have to be good at it. It trains your eye to notice shapes, colour, composition and light in a completely different way. 8. Visit museums and galleries. One of the fastest ways to grow creatively is to expose yourself to different ways of seeing the world. 9. Spend time with animals. They’ll teach you patience, timing and how to stay present in the moment. 10. Get bored once in a while. You don’t need to fill every quiet moment with scrolling. Your best ideas often show up when your mind finally has space to wander. My ideas show up when I am in the shower, driving or walking 🌳 Because becoming a better photographer isn’t just about using your camera more. It’s about learning to see the world differently. photography and everyday moments we dont want to lose🤍 We all have those moments we never want to lose. After losing my old dog, I felt that absence so deeply. And now, with Lissie, I’m just trying to be present and make sure I capture these small moments. A little reminder to capture the ordinary moments too 🤗 What’s something you wish you took more photos of?
