Purple sea urchins are 👾 overabundant on our Pacific coast, devouring underwater forests. It’s small volunteer projects like the one at @caspar_cove_project - picking up or culling purple sea urchins - that help restore the kelp. 🌊

And it’s the community that keeps us coming back to make an impact. Restoration is physical, relational, and ongoing. So join us to Bite Back! 👾 let’s eat and drink our way out of the eco crisis…

For the past 15 days, I have conducted fieldwork across the Gulf of Alaska and Southeast Alaska, from Kodiak to Sitka, following kelp forests and the many worlds that depend on them.

This journey has become a way of mapping relationships: kelp and sea otters, fishermen and the ocean, mountain and sea, bear and salmon, predator and prey, wild forest and kelp farms, coastal communities and global market, human knowledge and more-than-human life.

Along the way, I have met fishermen, kelp farmers, divers, scientists, Indigenous knowledge holders, processors, and researchers, each offering a different way of understanding the ocean and its transformations. What began as an investigation into kelp is becoming an investigation into interdependence—how an underwater forest connects food, livelihoods, cultures, climate, economies, and possible futures.

A huge thank you to everyone who has welcomed me, shared their knowledge, opened their boats, laboratories, kelp farms, homes, and stories: Nicholas Mangini @kisskelp Lexa Meyer @kodiakoceangrowers Melissa Good @alaskaseagrant Alix Laferriere @noaafisheries Angela Bowers @uasoutheast Jeff Feldpausch @sitkatribe @tesellie @selkiesnorkels @kcawradio @isuwiq Molly Odell @alutiiqmuseum Chris Sannito @kodiakwildsource @tylrdw @sitkascience Haleigh Yang @pitavu tirarajpt Terry Haines @kmxtkodiak @cheryl.heitman Eric Jordan, Stosh & Claudia Anderson, Florence Welsh, Andrea Smith...

Grateful to @villa.sf for supporting this fieldwork

“MULTIPLA” is a coined term born from the fusion of “Multiple” and “Art.”
While “Multiple Art” often suggests product-like works shaped by design or utility, we see something different in the works of Japanese creators.
Many transcend craftsmanship, carrying an inner spirituality and quiet presence that transforms object into art. They are not merely refined products, but vessels of sensibility shaped by a distinct Japanese intuition.
We define this unique sensibility as MULTIPLA: a concept of multiplicity with unseen depth.
This exhibition gives form to that new definition, offering the world a glimpse of the beauty and transience that emerge when art and spirit converge.

We made a zine for Bite Back! A pop up on the purple sea urchin decimating the kelp forest.

Featuring a text by Josie Iselin @josieiselin
HUNGRY GRAZERS OF THE BULL KELP FOREST

Urchin and kelp are constantly at battle over domination of subtidal ecologies; when the urchin populations are kept in check, either by human economies or natural predators, such as the sea otter and/or the sunflower sea star, the kelp forests grow lusciously dense, creating three-dimensional dynamic habitat for all the attendant fish and invertebrates to hide and reproduce safely.

When urchin populations are not kept in check, the stability of the habitat is lost and the kelp forest can transform into an urchin barren – bare rock bristling with a carpet of purple and red urchins with no kelp in sight. This ‘regime shift’, as it is called, can be swift. The nature of this co-evolutionary dance between urchins and kelp has been absorbing scientists and ecologists around the world OK for decades.

Other articles feature texts by @kalie_granier in collaboration with @ohlonecostanoanesselennation and @ahlecks89
