Before the privilege of traveling the world, my imagination was born in this place.

725 will always be more than just an address on Cliffside. It was home.

Built in 1959 by my grandparents, Roscoe and Minnie Bell Gilmore, this house became our family home. Four generations of Gilmores lived here throughout the years. For me, it was home from the time I was 10 months old until I was 18.

It was where some of my fondest memories were made and where my understanding of family, community, and where I come from was molded.

It was also here that photography first found me.

I can remember sneaking my mother’s Minolta XG-1 35mm camera to photograph the Christmas lights. I couldn’t have known then that those moments would eventually grow into my artistic medium and one of the great passions of my life.

Growing older and wiser has caused me to look at the Southside differently. Things change. People move. Buildings disappear, and neighborhoods transform into spaces we don’t always remember.

But memory has a way of holding onto a place.

Southside for Life is a journalistic approach to photographing that relationship—not simply to show what the Southside of High Point looks like, but what it feels like to someone who comes from here.

It’s only right that the first chapter begin at 725.

Before I could photograph the neighborhood, I needed to return home.

Some of these photographs survived. Some only exist in memory. Together, they are where this story begins.
