Cali 2: The Timber fire rerouted me in the best way to an elephant seal rookery. Mostly males- there was one female and two pups. The males are enormous! If you look closely you can see thick, scarred plates on their chests, and more marks around their necks. How they move all 4 tons of themselves to tussle is a mystery. by @love_tangledsky

Cali wrap up. Fish tacos, pinnipeds in spades, and look who I found, EECS!

BUT, beyond the postcard posts, and because I’m wired to look at relationship, belonging, and reciprocity, my unsolicited observation: California is a place of abundance living with scarcity.

It is a land both simultaneously wild and engineered, fertile and thirsty, extraordinarily wealthy and deeply unequal. It’s ecologically generous and ecologically stressed.

I think the contradictions here ARE the pulse of California I was looking for - it’s a place where obvious abundance makes its dependencies hidden.

I wondered how much life can California sustain as I drove through the Central Valley where calls for water were painted on signs near trailer parks, adjacent to gorgeous orchards. What does reciprocity look like when the limits are visible? by @love_tangledsky

Cali day 6: My great grandpa was a 49er. Simon Mulligan. Came out here. Went back East. Opened a pub. As any self-respecting Irishman would do, with a bit of coin. by @love_tangledsky

Cali 3-5 : Yosemite. My camera fails me. Trees hugged. Summits summited. And yes, the pay phone works. Dial #11 to talk to God. Dial #13 to talk to Social Security Administration. Dial #17 to talk to Wells Fargo. by @love_tangledsky

Day 1 Cali: Rugged headlands, turquoise coves, sea plants the colors of plums and persimmons, and a wild Monterey cypress grove. One of two on the planet. Damn, mama. You’ve outdone yourself. Last pic- where I snuggled into my sleeping bag. by @love_tangledsky
