Today I am just really, really grateful. Paris has been exactly what I needed. Lots of laughter, beautiful experiences, transparent conversations, [way] too much shopping, fantastic food, sleepless nights, endless steps, and a week with sisters I love. And then there was Céline. Her concert has stayed with me because so much of it was about coming back to life. About being grateful to still be able to do what you love after life has taken you through ... the things. ALL the things! There was so much humility in her stage presence but also so much unmistakable joy and gratitude. I get that. So today, I’m not overthinking it. I'm alive and I'm thankful ... and, yes, I’m aging ... which is such a precious gift! I am so grateful for the people who love me and for the people I get to love. I'm grateful for the God who cares for me, the places I still get to see, the things I still get to experience, and the fact that there is still so much joy to be had. #Paris has been a pretty wonderful way to walk into Great 58. They say muscle memory is powerful, and maybe that’s what's been happening these past couple of weeks when I found myself teary more than once and couldn’t figure out why. It hit me this evening that seven years ago today, I left my beloved Harlem home of 26 years at “870” and moved to New Jersey. I moved with so much hope and so much promise ahead. Just a few weeks after I arrived, Tim would propose. We’d spend the next year dreaming about our future, getting excited about the life we would build together, and having to pivot from a grand affair to a sweet (and extremely) small garden wedding because of the COVID curveball. So much of the life I imagined when I crossed the bridge into Jersey looks sooooo different now. There are so many empty spaces without Tim, but my life is not empty. There is still so much sweetness here. New friends. New community. New spaces to belong ... and some of them are spaces Tim lovingly made room for me in long before I knew how much I would need them now ... perhaps he knew. I think that’s what my unexplained tears represent: the reminder that even when life doesn’t look like the picture we once held in our hearts, God still has a way of working it all together for good. If your story looks different from the one you imagined, be encouraged. God’s plan is still unfolding.

Still grateful. Still hopeful. Still becoming. 💜

Today was Children’s Day - one of my favorite annual days on our church calendar. My heart is always so full watching our children lead the service and share the scriptures, lessons, and songs they’ve been learning since September. It always makes me think about how my own life was shaped by the love, sweat, and sacrifice my children’s and youth ministry leaders poured into me so many years ago. Many of them are gone now, but they are never forgotten in my heart.

Maybe that’s part of why being a godmother means so much to me. I have seven godchildren, ranging in age from 35 to 8, and each of them has been with me in church during some of their most formative years. (Amelia is my youngest godbaby - for now - with one more expected as a sweet Christmas gift later this year. ❤️)

If my godchildren remember nothing else about me, I want them to remember the tall lady who loved them dearly, prayed for them often, and always tried to point them to Jesus.

Ben and Fannie. Established 1976. "Better Together” was the theme for their 50th Anniversary celebration, but by the end of the weekend it felt bigger than that. It felt like the evidence of a marriage covered in grace, and of two people who have continually poured love into their family and friends for five decades. We traveled to Nashville from EVERYwhere to celebrate them, and the joy in every space was the harvest of the lives they’ve touched. Every story, every prayer, every hug, every smooth move on the dance floor, every detail … just so much love, laughter, light, life ... and a beautiful legacy still in the making. Cheers to two beautiful people, one beautiful marriage and 50 beautiful years of THAT kind of beautiful love!
