I don’t know about you but I love me a messy origin story 🤡in January, I flew to LA to meet @mrgnmok , track vocals and harmonies, and bring Try For Me, my baby, to lifethree musical therapy sessions, eight versions, and fourteen hours locked in the studio later, we walked out with a punchy-ass chorus that carried everything we’d been trying to saywe have a saying in Mexico: “no hay mal que por bien no venga” — something beautiful inevitably comes from even the ugliest circumstances. Try For Me is musical alchemy at its finest: taking pain, immortalizing it, and giving it somewhere to livemorgan, my bestie and musical therapist, understands that every song has an emotional landscape behind it. the instruments we choose, the vocal takes that borderline on method acting, the textures we build — every decision carries a piece of the story. Try For Me is out everywhere 💙s/o to my exes FR for the monolith of disappointment and heartache that led to this song - it pretty much becomes impossible to regret ANYTHING when its all reclaimed, reduced to thread and woven back into my musical tapestry. crafting this abomination was like being spat out of a congested sewage pipe because it’s a marker of la Roche’s most pivotal sonic transformation yet. it was one of those songs that was written acoustically but took on a whole new electronic identity and tone when @mufffuzz + I birthed it in the studio in less than 24 hours for the initial demo. from the beginning, I knew just how special of song, Try For Me, was and is and that faith carried me all the way to this moment. two years, one identity crisis and many trips to LA later, @mrgnmok + I finally made something worth the emotional damage. It’s International Pronouns Day! Sending love to my queer siblings who feel continually unseen in their gender expression and pronouns. Nothing could have prepared my parents in dealing with their non-binary, anomaly of a child, one unafraid of brazenly confronting the world to its face, who unapologetically refused to blend in, questioning God and gender alike in intense exposition of self. For years, I longed for an ecosystem free from these social arbitrations, a habitat defined by my inexhaustible vision. Baby Roche, there’s so much to tell you. One day you’ll take pride in the fact that you never fit in amongst your peers. One day you’ll grow to understand how radically unlike them you are, and thank goodness for that. The very things that distinctly set you apart from your peers, the very reasons you didn’t fit in to begin with, are the very things that make you so special. 1. People listen to your music. 2. You are celebrated for the very traits you were once bullied for. Being extra. Being loud. Having something to say. Your chosen family sees you in entirety and embraces you when your real family cannot.3. You made peace with your body and stopped pining for the gendered validation from others. Gay, queer, and trans children deserve to become adults. The right of the parent is not worth more than the safety of a gay, queer or trans child. Your ability or inability to cope with someone else’s gender does not take priority over someone else’s expression.
