Lovell Chen team members were delighted to attend the launch of Merchant Builders this is not subtopia! - a wonderful, erudite and timely contribution by Alan Pert and Philip Goad to our understanding of how one companies’ contribution to the design of our suburbs has lessons that should continue to resonate with us today.

Congratulations to all contributors to this truly magnificent tome, including Lovell Chen Director Adam Mornement, who is a contributing author.

Billilla Homestead continues to play an important role in community life as a cultural and civic landmark in Brighton.

Earlier this month, during the Melbourne Sculpture Biennale, the homestead and its grounds welcomed visitors to experience contemporary art within a significant heritage setting. Capturing these moments offered a valuable reminder of how heritage places evolve to support new forms of community use and engagement.

Lovell Chen is proud to be working with Bayside City Council on plans to improve accessibility and amenity at Billilla Homestead, helping ensure this much-loved place remains welcoming, inclusive and relevant for future generations.

A great visit to the International Conservation Services (@ics_melbourne) Lab in Melbourne yesterday.

Our team was given a behind-the-scenes look at the extraordinary care and craftsmanship that goes into conserving heritage objects and artworks. From removing graffiti from stone surfaces to preserving tapestries and artefacts, it was inspiring to see the knowledge, patience and precision involved in every stage of the process.

Thank you to the ICS team for their generosity in sharing their experience with us. It was especially rewarding to reconnect following our collaboration on the conservation and unveiling of the Trades Hall Honour Boards earlier this year.

Will and Olivia were on site at 295 Queen Street (Former Records Office) today, undertaking chimney investigations as part of our conservation works program covering façade and roof remediation works.

Built between 1900 and 1904, the Former Records Office was designed by the Victorian Public Works Department to store and protect the state's most significant government records, including births, deaths and marriages, legal records, and wills. The building remains one of Melbourne's finest examples of Victorian Second Empire architecture and was considered technologically advanced for its time, incorporating fire-resistant construction systems to protect valuable archives.

We are proud to be contributing to the conservation of this significant heritage asset and helping ensure its longevity for future generations.

After the popularity of our Open House Melbourne weekend tours of the Former Army Medical Corps Drill Hall in conjunction with the @historyvictoria, RHSV Executive Director Dr Steven Cooke kindly invited our office to experience the tour as guests.

Thank you to Steve, Henry, Cathy, Robert and Anne-Marie for sharing your knowledge of the site, granting us access to spaces not normally open to the public, and sparking conversations around how the building might remain a resource for the Victorian community. We all had a fascinating and fun evening!

Congratulations to Senior Associate Libby Blamey – winner of best peer-reviewed article by Professional Historians Australia!
Her paper ‘Larrikin pushes: place and space in 19th-century inner Melbourne suburbs’ for the ninth edition of Circa was judged “A wonderful study of urban history... well presented and researched and… an excellent example of how history contributes to an understanding of heritage value.”
“Although written about Melbourne, it could have implications for all Australian cities. The concept of public spaces and hyper-localism was an interesting highlight.”

After nearly twelve months of construction, works at Werribee Park Mansion are nearing completion. The mansion was established by pastoralist brothers Thomas and Andrew Chirnside in 1873 and is surrounded by an extensive formal garden complete with ornamental lake and grotto. The mansion itself is a fine example of the Renaissance Revival style, with much of the original or early interior decoration remaining intact. Whilst owned by the Catholic Church, the mansion was extended with the construction of the St. Joseph’s and Refectory Wings (1925-28) and the Theatre Wing (1936-37), now home to the Lancemore Hotel, the Refectory, and Parks Victoria offices.

Lovell Chen has been providing conservation and heritage services to the mansion since the 1970s and we've been proud to continue our association with the site during the current phase of repairs. The scope of works now approaching completion is extensive and responds to long-term leakage through the roofs, deterioration of stone and rendered facades, and includes major upgrades to the site’s fire protection system, essential safety measures, and accessibility improvements. These works are critical to ensure that the mansion meets contemporary compliance requirements and for the safety of building occupants in case of emergency.

We have enjoyed a fantastic working relationship with the contractor, our consultants, stakeholders and clients. The project is an exemplar of the complex interdisciplinary work we enjoy so much. Thanks must go to the team from @stokesrousseau and our clients at @parksvic in particular. The finish line is in sight!

As part of Lovell Chen’s ongoing services at the University of Melbourne, this week we are undertaking detailed at-height assessments of four buildings across the Parkville Campus. These inspections are completed as part of the University’s annual audit program and help to guide the University’s planning for building conservation, maintenance, and capital works.

The scope of our inspections this year includes the Percy Everett-designed Building 189 (1939-40), the expansive Peter Hall Building (1919-1923), the iconic Old Arts Building (1919-1924), and the earliest sandstone building at the University, the Old Quadrangle (commenced 1854). Zoe, Will, and Max have braved wildly variable weather conditions to ensure that the condition of these important buildings is comprehensively understood and works identified to maintain these structures for future generations.
