Nice that a little milestone follower number coincides with my new content pics ☺️ It’s been well over a year since my first obligatory “Hi, so happy you’re here” post, so the updated version starts…NOW.

Hey! I’m Maggie, the founder and creative director of love mhb studio, a place where needlepoint is bold, colorful, and fun, and the Reels aim to not only entertain and educate, but also mortify the teens on a weekly basis 😜

A little bit about how love mhb studio came to be: While I’ve been a cross-stitcher for the better part of my life, I found my way to needlepoint a few years ago and jumped in head first. As I was stitching my first canvas my pre-kids career as a graphic designer kicked in. I finished that canvas and immediately started creating my own designs and teaching myself how to paint needlepoint canvases. I started with an 18 mesh ornament. Bold move…😂 I now focus almost entirely on 13 mesh in a variety of sizes, though I’m currently obsessed with 7x5 and smaller. So quick and portable!

A little bit about where love mhb studio is going: Shops and stitchers alike constantly tell me how my designs are beginner friendly for those new to needlepoint, and fun canvases to play with decorative stitches for more seasoned stitchers. Music to my ears! I want to continue to bring stitchers of all levels fun and fresh designs, and to encourage everyone to get curious, play with color, and step out of their comfort zone. But if you want to get down to brass tacks I’m aiming for a 12 Days of Christmas collection and/or a nativity scene in the next year 😉

Currently: When I’m not designing, painting, stitching, or in the 🔥 Seventh Circle of Hell 🔥 called “inventory management,” I’m usually standing still on a “walk” with our Frenchie, on the sideline of one of the teens’ sporting events, on the sofa with my husband watching The Bear, or in our kitchen trying yet another new recipe I found on IG. (There’s a Highlight for that.)

Truly, thank you for being here and supporting me and my small business, and the growing needlepoint community and industry. There’s nothing like it!

No more Self-Finish Scaries! Although I’m showing you how I self finished my leather mahjong card sleeve, I use the same principles to most all self finishing products:

✂️ I always make sure my self finishing product is right side up. Don’t trust the direction of the 3M adhesive - sometimes it gets placed upside down!

✂️ I always make a b&w photocopy of the stitched piece I’m going to self finish to make sure the stitching fills the window before I cut the canvas. If I need to add rows, I have the time and space to do so.

✂️ I always cut AT LEAST 4 rows away from the canvas on the first pass. Remember, you can always trim away one row at a time from there to get the right amount of canvas to tuck underneath. What you can’t do is add rows back if you trim too close the first time.

✂️ I always test the lip of the leather window before scoring. I want to see how flexible it is and how much room I have underneath to tuck the unstitched cut canvas.

✂️ After scoring the 3M paper and removing it, I always try to center the stitched canvas with a light touch. Once I feel like it’s centered I lift one side to see if the rows are centered in the frame, and then do the same on the other side. Only then do I firmly press the stitched piece down to adhere.

✂️ To tuck the canvas underneath the lip of the self-finishing product I use my fingers when possible or a bone folder when the space is a little tighter. A bone folder works great in the corners.

I hope this takes the mystery (and some of the anxiety!) out of self-finishing your needlepoint projects with some of the fabulous leather and canvas products on the market! But if you have questions, comment below so that everyone can see the answer(s) 🙌🏼

LAUNCHING THIS WEEK! 🀄️❤️

The mats are here! And my boxes and tape are en route! The first two pieces of my new mahjong line are launching this week and I can’t wait for y’all to play on these. 31” square nice, thick neoprene mats that tiles just gliiiiiide across. An option for rules (light blue) and no rules (navy). But flowers for all 🌼

Listings for both will go live on my site this week. Shipping will start before Halloween (when my tape gets here 😂)

Wanna know what I love more than anything when I play on a mat with instructions? Being able to read them. From any seat. Even - and especially - when the racks hit the table.

Bonus points for a landing spot in the corners for the Charleston passes ❤️
