St. Catharines might be the most underrated city in Ontario and I have 36 hours of proof. Save this for your next weekend.

Every Great Lakes ship headed for the ocean has to climb eight locks right here, and most people have only ever seen this city from the QEW. Here’s the exact route, Lock 1 to Lock 8.

DAY ONE

1. Port Dalhousie Lighthouse + Old Lock One Commons. Start where the original canal met Lake Ontario. Go early, the pier is empty.

2. DeCew Falls. A waterfall inside city limits next to a working 1800s grist mill. Free.

3. Bright Pours Cafe. Coffee and the story of the neighbourhood from the people who run it.

4. Lock 3 Viewing Platform. Stand 20 feet from a 740-foot ship climbing the escarpment. Check the ship schedule before you go.

5. Mountain Locks Park. The ruins of the old stone locks, hidden in the woods. Almost nobody knows this is here.

6. Lock 7 in Thorold. The best view of the flight locks from above.

7. Market Square + downtown walkabout. Grab lunch at Grand Oak.

8. 13th Street Winery. The butter tarts are the reason to come. The wine is the reason to stay.

9. Happy Rolph’s. Sunset over Lake Ontario, and yes there are goats.

DAY TWO

10. RPM Bakehouse. Get there before 10 or it’s gone.

11. Jordan Village + Upper Canada Cheese. Twenty Valley, 15 minutes west, and worth every one.

12. Lock 8 Gateway Park, Port Colborne. The canal meets Lake Erie. You just followed a ship across a province.

13. Port Colborne Museum. Free, and it makes everything you just saw make sense.
