We recently took a trip to the "most popular tooth and fossil beach in the DMV", Calvert Cliffs. (Despite it's popularity, I think we actually had a better haul of shark teeth at Flag Pond Nature Park just a few miles up the road.)

After a 1.8 mile hike from the parking area, the trail opened up to the beach where we were able to play, splash in the water, and of course search for shark teeth and ancient fossils.

A few things to keep in mind if you are planning a trip:

⛱️ Don't forget to pay attention to the tides. A large portion of the beach will be covered and inaccessible at high tide.

🪼 Watch out for jelly fish. We always heard this area is swarming with jelly fish during certain times of the year and they weren't kidding. Interestingly, they didnt seem to be the stinging kind. In fact, we didnt even notice that we were stepping on them until someone pointed them out under our bare feet. Not sure if they never sting, or what the deal is so I guess watch out just in case lol. 🤷‍♀️

🥾 Red Trail: 1.8 miles each way / about 3.7 miles round trip

💵 Entrance: $5/vehicle for Maryland residents; $7 for out-of-state vehicles (cash only)

It has always been on my bucket list to jump in a limo and do a little vineyard hopping with friends. I finally checked that off my list, just sub the limo for a "mom van". (Probably more comfortable anyway.)

While there are dozens of wineries to choose from in Northern Va, we stuck to a few around Loudoun County.

🍇 @stonetowerwinery — Stunning views, upscale vibes, seriously good wine. Don't miss the wine cellar downstairs for amazing photos.
🍷@willowcroftfarmvineyards — Cozy, unpretentious, and charming all at the same time.
🌅 Sunset Hills Vineyard — Meh wine, i'd probably take this off your list.
⛰️ @bluemontvineyard — Incredible mountain views and the only vineyard we went to that you can actually walk through the grapes!

We only managed to hit 4 vineyards, so I guess that means we will need to do a Part II soon. Which vineyards should we try on our next trip?

I remember driving past this old, abandoned prison every time we headed to Potomac Mills. I'd be in the back seat of my mom's minivan, staring out the window trying to catch a glimpse through the fences, wondering what it looked like inside.

Fast forward 30 years, and I finally got to explore the grounds. Thankfully, not as a prison. 😅

Today, the prison has been completely transformed into the Workhouse Arts Center filled with galleries, artist studios, classes, and live performances.

And then there is Bunny Man Brewing. If you grew up in Northern Virginia, you probably remember hearing the Bunny Man urban legend. My friends and I definitely made a few trips to #BunnyManBridge as teenagers, convincing ourselves we'd see something creepy. 😂

We had to wait OVER A YEAR for this West Virginia reservation… not only that. We had to wait online for the clock to strike midnight when reservations would be released for exactly a year later.

Who would have thought a rustic fire tower with bare bones amenities would have such a long wait list.....but then we visited and let me tell you, we totally get it.

The Thorny Mountain Fire Tower is one of the most unique overnight stays in the country — 360° views, total isolation, and sunsets that don’t even look real. 🌄

No WiFi. No neighbors. Just us, the clouds, and a fire tower perched above the wilderness.

Although the first night was gorgeous, nature decided to send us a hurricane on night 2. Yes. We slept in a fire tower 65 ft. above ground with high winds, pouring rain, and constant flashes of lightning and cracking thunder. Despite the storms best try, the fire tower didn't budge. There wasn't even the least bit of swaying (thank goodness.)

It was an incredible experience and tops our list of most unique places to stay on the east coast!

We just found our new favorite farm-to-table restaurant… and it’s in a town you’ve probably never even heard of: Summerduck, Virginia.

We stumbled across @imperialfarmsva completely by chance, and I’m so glad we did because it was honestly one of the best meals we’ve had in a long time. (Try the Palaw🤤)

Pair that with the warm hospitality, calming pastoral views, fresh chai, and friendly animals… 👌

This place is a whole experience, and we’ll definitely be back.

Sledding at Blackwater Falls State Park… in 70° weather 😅

Was it muddy? Yes.

Did we have a muddy fun? Also yes.

Sliding through slush, laughing the whole way down, and embracing the chaos—definitely not your typical sledding day, but one we won’t forget anytime soon.

It’s been a while. Life took us into new jobs and new adventures, but we’ve missed traveling—and capturing the moments that spark joy and wanderlust. Not sure we’ll be as active as before, but we’re happy to be here.

Merry Christmas Eve from our family to yours!🎄

This trip was particularly special because Cici's mom was able to join. There is no greater love than a mom for her kids....but a Lola (grandma)'s love for her grandkids comes pretty close.

PS - Shout out to Kim from @potomaceagle (Last photo) . While all the staff on board the Potomac Eagle are wonderful, Kim is special. The first time we met her, Cici was 3 months pregnant with our daughter. On this trip, our daughter (now almost 2 years old) seemed to be immediately drawn to her, running over to her across the train car to sit in her lap. Such special memories 💕

Come check out the second largest beach in Virginia!

Colonial Beach is located along the sandy shores of the Potomac River, about 2 hrs south of DC.

The beach is over 2 miles long with five different beach zones to fit everyone's preferences. If you like lively music, we definitely recommend grabbing a spot by High Tides so you can enjoy the waves and some tunes all at the same time.

Continue south along the coast and you'll find The Pointe, a small beach along the southernmost point with the Dockside Restaurant and Tiki Bar.

If you have kids, check out the Castlewood Beach area for beaches, picnic tables, and playgrounds!

While we love our ocean beaches like Ocean City and Virginia Beach, we can't help but love the proximity and the small town vibes of Colonial Beach.
