What began in 2024 as a conversation between myself and Lowel Alomar @lowelalomar about his childhood community in the Rockaways slowly evolved into a film shaped by shoreline communities, environmental memory, migration, and the people fighting to remain connected to water, land, and each other.

Around the same time, I found myself in conversation with my aunt, an environmental scientist who raised me in India, reflecting on the relationship between science, environmental care, and African traditional knowledge systems. Those conversations stayed with me and deeply shaped the language of this project.

Included in this carousel is a moment from 2024, when Lowel and I were honored with a Citation of Recognition from Council Member Selvena Brooks-Powers’ @cmselvenabrookspowers office through the Flushing Town Hall Queens @flushing_town_hall Artists Grant.

Honored now to have also received support from the Brooklyn Arts Council @bkartscouncil through the Brooklyn Arts Fund 2026 to help bring The Sixth Borough to completion.

Thank you to BRIC @bricbrooklyn and the BRIClab Film & TV Residency @cthoxie and to the residents, our dear friend @elijahxiii , organizers, scientists, artists, and community members who trusted us with their stories along the way.

Before the larger screens, we wanted the community to experience this rough-cut of our film first.

Grateful to start the year sharing something we’ve been quietly building ✨

My partner Lowel @lowelalomar and I have been part of the BRIC TV + Film Residency @bricbrooklyn since October, working alongside Elijah @elijahxiii to tell a story rooted in New York City’s coastal communities. This documentary looks at the shoreline not just as geography, but as a condition shaped by neglect, resilience, memory, and care.

This is one of two documentary projects I’m working on this year, and it feels right to begin 2026 with a project I’m deeply proud of. We’re officially in production mode at BRIC, and I’m excited to invite you all to a preview screening this May with the rest of our incredible cohort.

More updates soon. Thank you for walking with us 🩵✨ taken in BRIC by @lowelalomar

Meet this year’s 2025–26 BRIClab: Film + TV cohort! 🎬

This year-long residency supports emerging and mid-career filmmakers as they develop ambitious and innovative short form, episodic, or feature length non-fiction films.

Elana Meyers & Katie Heiserman (@2trainproductions, @katieheiserman) — Dirty Days in Fun City
A documentary unearthing the overlooked 1968 New York sanitation strike and its connection to the Black-led labor action in Memphis, where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated. Through the lens of labor and waste, the film asks what, and who, society deems valuable or disposable.

Lowel Alomar & Destinie Adélakun (@lowelalomar @destinieadelakun) — The Sixth Boro
A cinematic exploration of how climate change, over-development, and systemic neglect are reshaping New York City’s coastal communities. Told through an Afro-Indigenous ecological lens, The Sixth Boro is both a love letter to resilience and a call to action for climate justice.

Brian Redondo (@thebrianredondo) — MIND BODY SOUL
A feature documentary following break-dancer Sunny Choi as she becomes the first American woman to compete at the Olympics in breaking. As she prepares for the Paris 2024 Games, the film captures her battle to balance ambition and mental health.

🎥✨ What a wave. What a movement.

💃🏾The Afro Diasporic Ocean Festival wasn’t just an event — it was a homecoming, a healing, and a celebration of our roots, our rhythms, and our resistance.

❤️Thank you to every artist, elder, youth, and soul who showed up and poured into this experience.

Much love and gratitude to @lowelalomar for capturing it all so beautifully in this video. 🖤 by @lowelalomar

Thank you @JBRPC and New Hamilton Beach Civic Association for inviting me to the Hamilton Beach Park Shoreline Cleanup. It was amazing to see people from all over nyc who share a vision of fostering a healthier environment in our world.

Repost from JBRPC:
Jamaica Bay is our home. Keeping it clean, safe and accessible is our mission — for our friends and neighbors, for flora and fauna, for visitors enjoying the only national park in the U.S. you can access by subway. 🌊

Most recently, our staff and volunteers cleared debris from Hamilton Beach Park. Thank you to Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer-Amato @stacey_23ad, Councilwoman Joann Ariola @joannariola32, Roger Gendron of the New Hamilton Beach Civic Association @rgen36 and @gatewaynps for supporting this effort, and for all you do year-round. Thank you also to @HNTBcorp for volunteering your time over the weekend!🙏 by @lowelalomar

In the Rockaways, @black_surfing_rockaway offers complimentary surfing lessons to children. With New York City facing a shortage of lifeguards, initiatives like this play a crucial role in ensuring the safety of the Rockaway community.

Here is what surfing coach @samaya.kanu has to say about the future of surfing in the Rockaways.
