Congratulations to the Lowell HIgh School National Honor Society, which was recently recognized as a Chapter of Distinction by the National Principals Association for its exemplary record of leadership, service and efforts to improve the school and community,

Last year, the Lowell High School chapter’s 265 members logged more than 7,600 hours of service throughout the year. Those included a fundraiser for local fire victims, several food drives for local food pantries, a middle school pen pal program, neighborhood cleanups, and many other activities in and around Lowell.

"The NHS Chapter of Distinction Award celebrates chapters that truly embody what the National Honor Society stands for—students who don't just excel academically but actively strengthen their communities," said NPA CEO Ronn Nozoe. "The Lowell High School chapter demonstrates how powerful it can be when young leaders channel their talents toward meaningful service and positive change."

“Our members understand that while belonging to the NHS is a personal honor, it is, more importantly, an essential opportunity to be useful members of the community,” NHS Adviser Darrin Berard said. “Our members truly embrace that responsibility. I am so proud of our NHS members and leaders.”

The NHS Chapters of Distinction is a national recognition program created by NHS to honor chapters that demonstrate strong leadership, sound operations and a deep commitment to the pillars of the Honor Society. This distinction recognizes chapters that meet all Essential Standards and excel in key areas such as student governance and leadership development. by @lowellpsd

Phil Conners has been hired as the new head coach of the LHS boys basketball program. Conners replaces Bob Michalczyk, who recently resigned after a highly successful 13-season tenure and 192 victories.

To ensure continuity within the program, long-time lead varsity assistant coach Chris Crowley is expected to remain on the Red Raiders coaching staff.

Conners has a deep, long-standing connection to the community, serving as an 8th-grade English teacher at the Stoklosa Middle School since 2002. He is also a 1998 graduate of Lowell High School, where he played basketball and earned MVC All-Star honors before putting together a four-year playing career at Westfield State College, serving as senior captain and team MVP.

Conners brings 16 years of varsity head coaching experience to Lowell, having qualified for the MIAA state tournament in all 16 seasons. Most recently, he spent ten seasons as the head coach at Burlington High School (2016-2026), where his teams won six Middlesex League championships and advanced to the Division 2 Final Four in 2022. He finished his tenure at Burlington last season with a 19-4 record and an Elite Eight appearance.

Prior to Burlington, Conners served as head coach at Tewksbury Memorial High School (2011-2016). In five seasons at Tewksbury, he turned around a struggling program to win three consecutive MVC championships and was named MVC Coach of the Year three times. Conners also began his coaching career on the Lowell High staff, serving as the Head Freshman Coach (2003-2006), Varsity Assistant (2006-2008), and Interim Head Coach (2009-2010), where he guided an inexperienced roster to an 11-7 record and a state tournament berth.

Lowell will officially open its season on Friday night, December 11th, hosting Millbury High School at the Riddick Athletic Center. Information regarding a formal introductory meeting for players and families will be announced directly through the team's returning players. by @lowellpsd
