Red Knight Resting

If you told me this time six weeks ago that spontaneously attending a life drawing class would lead to a piece like this I wouldn’t have believed you, but @mmhartist put on such a fun class and @lowercase.larp made such a good model, and I have never once known how to scale a project appropriately.

It’s been a lot of fun watching this one come together

Painting of @lowercase.larp as Red the Knight, referenced from photos I took at the last Fantasy Life Drawing (swipe to see the reference!)

Grace gave us really excellent poses with a lot of character behind them! I loved the emotion behind the posing and Grace gave us so much story, this painting just fell out of me in a couple of days.

I love painting fantasy but it's difficult when you have to come up with everything yourself. Part of why I created the Fantasy Life Drawing series was to get reference material for things I couldn't find anywhere else. And I've been gathering lots of good references for future paintings.. 👁👁

A painting is often only as good as its reference - and this painting came together so quickly because the references took much of the decision-making out of the process. Also, it hugely helps to do a charcoal study with the live model first - so many variables and details happen in real life that dont always come through in a photograph.

It makes me really happy to see other artists using the sessions to inform their own artworks too. This is all the same process that the old masters used - some things are just tried and true.

I feel like I made those hands quite huge in this image though haha but I'm just going to say it's a creative decision!!!!! Like Kingdom Hearts style.. let's just say that 😄 by @lowercase.larp
