✨DIY Seed Starting Mix✨Thanks to @allaboutthegardenpics for sending me these amazing long lasting seed trays!! They are the best l’ve come across. Super durable with big holes for drainage and easy plant removal! They are made from recycled plastics and are BPA free, food-safe, and UV stable.**Use code LOWKEY10 for 10% off your order at allaboutthegarden.com**This is my first year making my own seed starting mix, and I’m super excited about how legit I am now 😎🌱Last year was my first year starting seeds, and I just used regular store-bought potting soil. And the results were mid at best. So l’m leveling up my game this year. This recipe is a variation on some I have seen and thought that it sounded good, so I’m trying it out!• 1 block coco coir, pour boiling water on top to loosen it up - It’s a sustainable alternative to peat moss, providing excellent water retention and aeration. It also has a neutral pH, which helps prevent nutrient imbalances and promotes healthy roo development.•2 cups vermiculite - This mineral helps improve soil aeration and moisture retention, which are essential for seed germination and early seedling growth. It also aids in preventing compaction of the soil, allowing roots to penetrate easily.• 1.5 cups perlite - Perlite is a volcanic mineral that improves soil drainage and aeration. It helps prevent soil compaction and allows roots to access oxygen more readily, promoting healthier root growth and overall plant development.• 2 cups worm castings - Also known as vermicompost, worm castings are rich in nutrients, beneficial microorganisms, and enzymes that promote soil health and plant growth. They provide a slow-release source of nutrients for seedlings and help improve soil structure.• Dash of cinnamon - Cinnamon has natural antifungal properties, which can help prevent damping-off disease in seedlings. Damping-off is a common fungal disease that affects seedlings, causing them to wilt and die. Adding cinnamon to the soil mix can help inhibit the growth of harmful fungi and promote healthier seedling growth.#homestead #garden #seedstarting #homesteadlife #growyourown #seeds #planting by @lowkeyhomestead

✨ Drop “COOP” in the comments if you want a link to my favorite coop setup sent straight to your inbox!✨This isn’t about neglecting your coop, it’s about setting it up in a way that makes daily care stupid easy. A few quick habits each day keep everything clean, fresh, and low-maintenance without the need for constant deep cleaning. Here’s how to make chicken keeping as effortless as possible!🐓 Coop Size & Roosting Space✔️ 4-5 sq ft per chicken inside – Prevents crowding, especially in bad weather.✔️ 10 sq ft per chicken in the run – More space = less mess.✔️ Roosting bars at least 18 inches high – Higher than nesting boxes to keep them from sleeping (and pooping) where they lay.🥚 Nesting Boxes✔️ 1 box per 3-4 hens – But they’ll fight over the same one anyway.✔️ Keep it dark & private – Hens prefer quiet spaces to lay.✔️ Best options:•Aspen nesting pads – Fully compostable, easy swap-out, keeps eggs clean.•Hemp or pine shavings – Absorbent, low dust, and easy to replace.🌬️ Ventilation & Predator-Proofing✔️ Ventilation near the roof – Prevents moisture buildup without direct drafts.✔️ Hardware cloth, NOT chicken wire – Chicken wire won’t stop predators.✔️ Bury wire or use a predator apron – Stops anything from getting under the coop.✔️ Cover the run – If you have aerial predators, use netting or welded wire. For full weather protection, add a solid roof (metal or poly panels work great).🚰 Food & Water – Low Maintenance Setup✔️ Feeder options:•Bulk feeders (what we use) – Holds more feed, less refilling.•Treadle feeders – Opens when chickens step on it, keeps rodents out.•PVC tube feeders – Holds a lot, minimizes waste.✔️ Waterer options:•Bulk waterers – Less refilling.•Nipple waterers – Stays clean.•Heated waterers – No frozen water in winter.✔️ Keep feeders rodent-proof – Store feed securely and use rodent-resistant feeders.🧼 The Easiest Coop Cleaning Method✔️ Sand under roosts – Works like a litter box, quick daily sifting keeps it clean.✔️ Hemp bedding – Controls moisture, reduces odor, lasts months.✔️ Lime under bedding – Absorbs moisture, controls odor & deters pests#chickens #backyardchickens #homestead by @lowkeyhomestead
