“A liberal arts discipline is one that asks big, fundamental questions about the nature of the universe,” says Jennifer Johnson-Hanks, the Executive Dean of Letters and Science.

The College of Letters and Science is the largest on Berkeley’s campus. Roughly 75 percent of all undergraduate students major in one of the college’s 79 majors. While the roots of the liberal arts practice may be centuries old, the college’s rigorous study and cross-disciplinary ethos sets students up to tackle both age old concerns and the thorniest questions of our time.

Watch Johnson-Hanks explain the liberal arts in 101 seconds.

Every day, UC Berkeley associate project scientist Julie Elie comes to work and asks herself the same question: “What is this animal telling me?”

If you’re not a bird person, you may not be able to distinguish between the different sounds birds make. Elie has spent years listening to the zebra finch, a small, social songbird.

Thanks to her work in Berkeley’s department of neuroscience research, we have new insights into their chatter.

Her patient studies have yielded new insights into the language of the tiny finches and won her the 2026 Coller-Dolittle Prize, which rewards progress towards interspecies communication.

“I was admitted to Berkeley, but I was shaped and formed by my degree in rhetoric.” 🏫🐻

For @uscgouldlaw Assistant Professor Terry Allen (@terrytakeyourtime), UC Berkeley wasn’t just a school he attended; it was a place he could feel. From getting lost in Dwinelle Hall to leading DeCal courses on social media and theater, Terry’s time on campus was an intellectual and social awakening.

“Berkeley gave me a sense of mission that has never left me,” he shares. “Success by itself felt too small. You had to be excellent in service of something bigger than you.”

After Berkeley, Terry’s mission took him from interning at the White House to earning a PhD and a JD. Today, he is a professor at USC Gould School of Law, where his research, including work that helped stop the arrest of children under 13 in LA schools, is proving that scholarship belongs in the community, not just the ivory tower.

Now a mentor to over 1,000 students, Terry is paying forward the “yes” he received at Cal.

When asked what advice he has for current Golden Bears looking to create social change, Terry’s answer is simple: “The way you honor what has been given to you is by giving it to someone else. Don’t treat your gifts like something you should hoard. Let what you’ve learned become someone else’s opening.”

Terry left Berkeley with a responsibility. And in the present day, he is ensuring that the doors of opportunity stay open for everyone following in his footsteps.

“I am obligated,” Terry says, “Not as something I think about in the abstract, but as something I live. It is my responsibility. Someone once answered that call for me when I needed it most. So I try, in every way I can, to answer it again and again and again.”

“In first grade, I was lucky enough to discover books. I really feel like they saved my life.

I grew up in a working-class family in Chicago, and I spent most of my life in situations where it didn’t feel safe to say I was a poet.

Once I learned to read, I didn’t stop. I just read and read and read. My home was the worst place in the world, but my room was my little haven.

After school, I’d walk to the library without my mother knowing and spend hours there.

Then, when I was 15, I was institutionalized. The bars on the inside of the hospital windows made it impossible to open them, so I didn’t see any sunlight while I was there. It was hell for me.

The only book I had with me was Leaves of Grass by the 19th-century poet Walt Whitman. That’s what saved me. It was a beautiful thing to realize that everything’s connected and that, through writing, we are all talking to each other across time.

When I got out a few weeks later, I had a profound moment when I knew: I am a poet. There was no longer a difference for me between writing poetry and living.

I moved to Wyoming to take a dishwasher position at a restaurant. That’s when I discovered cooking. It was creative, challenging and something I could believe in.

In 2015, I started at Berkeley’s Chez Panisse and soon became a lead cook. All the while, I was writing whenever I could. But I never showed my work to anyone.

I’ve since published more than 170 poems and received nominations for Best of the Net and a Touchstone Award. I often explore themes like food and housing insecurity, intergenerational trauma and urban history.

Freedom of expression is incredibly important to me. That’s why I decided to come to Berkeley. I plan to major in English and minor in creative writing or rhetoric.

After I earn my B.A., I’d like to pursue an MFA in poetry and then a Ph.D. overseas.

One day, I’d love to be a poetry professor. Because I struggled so much to find knowledge on my own, being able to share it with someone else is incredibly rewarding.” — Michael Battisto (@mbattisto)

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and UC Berkeley are joining forces to launch the Nancy Pelosi Institute for Representative Democracy, a new nonpartisan institute dedicated to strengthening American democracy.

Launching in January 2027, the institute will bring together faculty, students and visiting leaders to study democracy's toughest challenges, from polarization to the future of AI, and to prepare the next generation of civic leaders.

Charles Long has been awarded the University Medal, given each year to UC Berkeley’s top graduating senior.

At 43, Long is a double major in sociology and social welfare. Through his studies of policing and violence, he has harnessed his childhood struggle, time incarcerated and experience as a nontraditional student to positively impact those around him.

In a letter of recommendation, Laleh Behbehanian, a continuing lecturer in the Department of Sociology, wrote that Long’s ability to blend theoretical, analytic and critical thinking placed him among the most outstanding students she’d encountered in her 23 years of teaching.

Since his first days on campus, Long’s work as a mentor and teacher in juvenile halls and San Quentin State Prison has shaped his research and inspired him to improve the carceral system.

“I once had my future taken from me by a system that called itself justice,” he wrote in his university medalist essay.

“Berkeley gave me the credentials, credibility and restoration of spirit to return to those same systems — this time with tools, language and purpose.”
