"I read the last few pages of I Cheerfully Refuse in Lake Michigan. Like Rainy, I find comfort in the lake. It's a place to escape from society and its pressures. I've enjoyed reading about his journey, especially through his lens as narrator. He is as unreliable as the lake itself. Over the years, I've experienced so many versions of Lake Michigan. It's been with me through it all."

"I took this photo in Northport, NY. I love this spot because it has a beautiful view of the harbor with small shops nearby where I can grab a coffee during reading breaks. I especially enjoy its location near the water as I read about Rainy docking in towns and meeting people like the Girards. It reminds me of how places around me are so full of the kind of hope that Rainy spends the book looking for."

As we prepare for our FINAL virtual book club for Honors Summer Reads 2026, we wanted to share a recent cover redesign we received from incoming first year, Kenna Charbauski! Thank you for this beautiful submission.

Today’s Honors Summer Reads cover redesign comes from the one and only, Matty Vogel. If you’d like to redesign the cover of “I Cheerfully Refuse,” have at it! Our staff will be voting on their favorite cover which will then act as the artwork for the playlist.

On behalf of the Honors Summer Fellows, you are cordially invited to our 2026 Poster Showcase!

All of our fellows will be present to share their research, respond to questions, and celebrate all they've accomplished this summer.

When: Tuesday, July 21st, from 2pm - 4pm
Where: At The Michigan Union, Pendleton Room
Who: Anyone and everyone, this event is open to the public.

We will also be providing refreshments throughout the event. We look forward to seeing you there!

Throughout the summer months, our cohort of Honors Summer Fellows tackle some pretty difficult questions during their weekly meetings.

Rising Senior, Anthony George, who studies Biophysics and Biochemistry, took some time out of his Tuesday session to answer a (goofy) difficult question.

"Is a hotdog fundamentally a taco, sub sandwich, or it's own culinary invention?"

Anthony also shared a difficult question which his research at the Castro and Lowenstein Lab is attempting to answer.

If talking nerdy about theses is your jam, swing by the Honors Summer Fellows Poster Showcase on Tuesday, July 21st, from 2pm - 4pm, in The Pendleton at the Michigan Union! All of our fellows will be present and we'll be talking nerdy all afternoon. We hope to see you there! by @lsahonors

Today’s Desert Island Book List comes from rising Sophomore, Matty Vogel.

“If I were stranded on a deserted island, it is safe to say that I would have an abundance of time on my hands! I would use this time to read and exercise. I recently ran the Boston Marathon, and my next challenge is an Ironman 70.3 this summer. Thus, my reading has been centered on running, biking, and swimming lately. ‘Iron War’ and ‘The Running Ground’ center on these disciplines; moreover, they focus on getting the most out of oneself, not only physically, but also psychologically. ‘Born to Run’ is a rather spiritual novel that tells the story of a random group of people on a journey through the Copper Canyons. The remaining books–’Outliers,’ ‘Grit,’ and ‘The Tipping Point’—are books I am currently reading or books I have been meaning to read; there would be no better time than being on a deserted island!”

If you’d like to submit to this challenge, snap a photo of your 5 -6 books and write a brief blurb explaining why you chose those books to take with you on a deserted island.
