When I call my father on the phone to wish him a Happy Birthday, he always sings along with the song.
ā€œHappy Birthday, to you!ā€ ā€œTo meeee!ā€ Happy Birthday, to youā€œ ā€œTo meee!ā€ Happy Birthday, dear Papa!ā€ ā€œDear Papa!!ā€ ā€œHappy Birthday, to you!ā€ ā€œTo meee!!!ā€ And then in a slow baritone… Papa chimesā€¦ā€And many moreā€¦ā€ šŸŽ¶
I love you, Papa. šŸ’™ taken in Roaring Run Falls and Furnace Trail by @ltizzle_nyc

Every time I pass by this intersection by the BQE, it reminds me of the time @lylatimes ā€œkidnappedā€ @postworldwar & me a kazillion years ago to repaint her bright orange red kitchen. When she went out for coffee the next morning, I decided to change the direction of the hinges/swing on her refrigerator so it would open up into the kitchen vs the wall. And Peter rehung the door on her bathroom so it wouldn’t bang into the toilet. She was super freaked out to see these doors on the floor when she came back. But there was no reason to worry, it all worked out. It’s so funny the things that stick with us. taken in Williamsburg by @ltizzle_nyc

There’s a lot I remember and a lot I don’t. Or maybe just a lot I’ve never actually spoken about. But when I think about the people I knew who lost their lives that day, I still get a knot in my throat.

And somehow it’s been 25 years now.

It’s strange what stays with you. The impossibly blue sky. That forever lingering smell. The voices on my answering machine. Walking around the eerily quiet streets afterward, trying to find each other, and finding some comfort in physically being able to see and speak to one another. And hearing everyone’s stories, realizing just how close some of us had come. taken in New York, New York by @ltizzle_nyc

So wonderful getting to see Dr. Levinson’s sons, Mark and John, who are visiting Brooklyn for the wedding of John’s son. It was truly so special that, with John here as the father of the groom and both of them in the middle of such an important family celebration, they reached out and carved out time to visit with me. The first and only other time we’d met in person was back in 2012, so being able to spend time with them again today was especially sentimental.

Their father, Dr. John M. Levinson, had worked at the hospital where I was born in Vietnam many years before my birth, and later played a significant role in the chain of events that ultimately led to me being here (& alive!) today. We serendipitously met during my first year in New York, when he happened to walk into the gallery where I had started working just two weeks earlier. It was through a completely random conversation that we discovered this incredible connection between his history in Vietnam and my own.

The Certificate of Appreciation he received from the Vietnamese government for his medical work there, which their family entrusted to me years ago, still hangs above my desk.

Catching up with them today of course sent me down the rabbit hole again, reminiscing about my own history and revisiting the letters and conversations I shared with their father. It made me appreciate all over again just how amazing it was that we randomly met in the first place.

It really is so amazing that all these years later we’ve remained in each other’s lives, sharing emails, texts and life updates along the way. I can’t express enough just how special it is being able to share this connection and to still have them as a part of my life all these years later.

Still smiling from Saturday night after all of the birthday cheer. ā¤ļø

A couple of days earlier, I had the good fortune of meeting Paris-based Irish chef Adam Purcell, who kindly invited me to his pop-up at @with.others.bk. I didn’t really have anything planned for my birthday, so it felt especially serendipitous to meet someone during his final few days in Brooklyn who shares a passion for food and just so happened to be hosting a short series of pop-ups.

The evening started with pre-dinner birthday drinks and some new furry friends at @luckydog, followed by the unforgettable seven-course dinner by Chef @adampurcell91 and Chef @luimigz. With each delicious course came another layer of thoughtful creativity, surprise Pét-Nat toasts with the chefs, and the most delicious birthday tart. We wrapped up the night with more celebratory drinks, laughter, and great company with friends at @ionabarbrooklyn.

Beautiful food, unforgettable memories, and the best company.

Thank you to everyone who sent messages, called, celebrated with me, and helped make my birthday feel so incredibly special. I truly appreciate every one of you.

Sometimes the best birthdays are the ones that come together unexpectedly.

Here’s to another trip around the sun. šŸ„‚āœØ taken in Williamsburg NYC by @ltizzle_nyc

When I moved into my current apartment, my father came up to help. As I was thanking him for three very full days of work, he added, ā€œAnd for hanging up 45 piecesā€¦ā€

Of course he had been keeping a running tally the entire time.

To my wonderfully meticulous father, who somehow knows exactly how many pictures we’ve hung, steps it takes to get to the top floor, and random facts and figures at any given moment, Happy Papa’s Day. ā¤ļø by @ltizzle_nyc

To say this year was anything but challenging would be an understatement. I don’t often share much about my personal life, but I’ve been thinking a lot about my family this year.

In the spaces in between, outside of the work and the hustle, I’m deeply grateful for dear friends, a lot of good food, and our wonderful Brooklyn community.

14,883 steps later and a very full heart.

Kicked the day off with bloody marys, wings, and bánh miĢ€ at @mekelbergs, then margaritas from @heytacocina and playtime at @dominopark. Grabbed bagels from @bagelsmithnyc, stopped into @charlestonbar for a quick shot, picked up ice cream at @emackandbolios, and sipped passion fruit daiquiris in the garden at @blinkysbar.

Bushwick beers at @oldstanleys, a round of shots at @talon_brooklyn, then a proper New York feast at @velmarestaurant devouring crispy chicken nuggets, fried cheese, calamari, meatballs, mussels, fettuccine, and a giant pizza pie. All paired with cold mugs of beer, glasses of sangiovese, and decadent espresso martinis, before a final nightcap at @rararhinonyc.

A late-night stroll through @mariahernandezpark was the perfect end to a day of celebrating, indulgence, and time with people I adore. Thank you, dear friends, for all of the lovely birthday messages, songs, and wishes. You all truly made me feel celebrated and loved. taken in Bushwick/Ridgewood by @ltizzle_nyc
