“Clown in a Cornfield 2: Frendo Lives” by Adam Cesare was a solid book for the most part. Even though I preferred the first one more, this was still one hell of a ride as I enjoyed all the slasherific horror. Before I dive into the trigger warnings I found while reading, here is every entry so far in the Clown in a Cornfield book series: - Clown in a Cornfield - Clown in a Cornfield 2: Frendo Lives - The Church of Frendo - Lights! Camera! Frendo! I didn't find any trigger warnings while reading, so nothing to worry about there. Moving along, I’ve been loving Cesare’s writing style and thought he did a brilliant job of connecting the first book to this one through a character who witnessed the famous Kettle Springs Massacre. It all made sense and clicked with me, especially with how this character was integrated into the current situation in Kettle Springs. It was nice to read what Quinn, Rust, and Cole were up to, even Quinn’s dad, Glenn. It didn’t take long for the first of several crazy plot twists to hit around the 30% mark that I never saw coming. Cesare’s slasher-filled events and situations are truly top-notch. My goodness, he brings the bloodshed, which makes my horror-loving heart happy. All the insane slasher horror parts were gory, descriptive, and flat-out wild. I know these are Young Adult books, but wow, he once again brought the pure carnage in this one. This was a solid story, but at times it dragged on. Don’t worry, no spoilers here, but with all the awesome plot twists along the way, it sometimes felt a bit all over the place. With so much happening across multiple characters and POVs, it felt a bit disjointed to me. “Clown in a Cornfield” by Adam Cesare is the first novel in the series, and the very first time I’ve ever read his work. Not only are his writing skills exceptional, but make no mistake about it, this was one hell of a way to launch this book series. Before I dive into the trigger warnings I found while reading, here is every entry so far in the Clown in a Cornfield book series: - Clown in a Cornfield - Clown in a Cornfield 2: Frendo Lives - The Church of Frendo - Lights! Camera! Frendo! Here are all the trigger warnings I found while reading: - Politics - Drug addiction - Suicide - Cancer If any of these trigger you, please do not read this novel. Moving along, I committed a cardinal sin. I saw the movie before reading the book. I know, I know. As a massive horror movie fan, when I saw this got a buzzy film adaptation, I had to see it opening weekend. I enjoyed the movie for the most part. It wasn’t extraordinary, but it wasn’t terrible. I gave it a 3-Star rating out of 5. It was fun, but as always, now that I've finally gotten to read the first entry, the book is better than the movie. Right from the start, the prologue set the tone for what would become a rollercoaster ride. It was shocking, to say the least. Cesare’s atmospheric writing made me feel as if I lived in the small town of Kettle Springs, with all its horrific secrets and lore. All the characters were great and unique in their own way, with Quinn being my favorite. My goodness, I loved her character and how she became one of my all-time favorite final girls in horror books. The story was exceptional, especially once the slasher horror finally hit out of nowhere. All the gore and bloodshed were top-notch, especially with the whole horror mystery unfolding about Frendo the clown. Don’t worry, no spoilers here, but I loved all the twists and turns involving Frendo. “Devil Inside” by Clay McLeod Chapman is the first horrormance novel I’ve ever read. This was a unique way to tell a story that blends what happens when horror and romance flirt with an evil twist. Before I dive into my horror book review, here are the trigger warnings I found while reading: - Depression - Religion - Drugs - Dementia - Violence against children - Self-harm - Violence against animals (birds) If any of these trigger you, please do not read this novel. Moving along, I’m glad Chapman started this novel with a quick heads-up on what kind of book this is, dubbed a “horrormance.” Now, to be honest, I personally hate romance books. I’ve never enjoyed them, and even though I’ve read barely a few over the past 30+ years, they just don’t do anything for me. I find them incredibly boring, and obviously not for me, as an avid horror reader. However, I went into this with an open mind, and I’m glad I did. Even before I read this horrormance novel, I finally got to meet Chapman at a book signing event (Summer Of Horrors 2026 - Carry Me to Your Bookshelf Tour), and he told me that even if I don’t read romance, this is still a horror book through and through. He was right, because this was executed well. The killer prologue set the tone for all the evil that awaited. I loved the intro to Lilith as it felt very raw, real, and, of course, evil. This was such an awesome and unique way to introduce a demon. Speaking of which, all the great and creepy demonic possessions here were fantastic. I loved learning what goes through the mind of a demon when they finally enter their victim. “Tom (Nightmares Book 2)” by Tobias Youngblood & Oliver Shade is one of those creepy, disturbing, and suspenseful horror books that will leave its scar on you. This was a short, fast-paced, and engaging read with a solid sense of buildup from start to end. I couldn’t put this book down, and even though it wasn’t perfect, this was a memorable reading experience. Before I dive into my horror book review, here are all the trigger warnings I found while reading: - Religion - Violence against animals (mice, cats, and squirrels) - Suicide - Domestic abuse (physical and mental) - Alcoholism If any of these trigger you, please do not read this book. Moving along, I loved the story here, told from the perspective of a child named Pete during those witch-hunting eras of many moons ago. It gave great insight into the dread, witches, spells, curses, and creatures of that time. This was all brilliantly written, and I felt as if I were Pete living through all that misery and religious fear. Although I wish this book had a bit more horror, the horror that is here is very subtle. I wanted more of that, especially when it led to finding out exactly what Tom is. Don’t worry, no spoilers here, but everything involving Tom was unnerving. It was also pretty emotional once I got to the second half of the book with everything going on. The suspense, thrills, and plot twists along the way made for an interesting ending. “Tricksters: Squidbeard” by Dominick Russo is the first book in a middle-grade monster-horror series suitable for readers ages 8 to 15. This is the first time I’ve ever read Russo, and I enjoyed this book for the most part, especially the illustrations. There aren't any trigger warnings to worry about here, as Russo keeps the horror accessible for the middle-grade audience. I enjoyed the overall story, and as previously mentioned, the illustrations were awesome and added an extra layer of immersion. This reads a lot like a "Goosebumps" book by R.L. Stine, but for young teenagers who want to get into reading horror but feel too old for Goosebumps yet too young to dive into true horror novels meant for young adults. This is a happy medium. As the start of a book series, the originality here truly shines. It’s a unique take on the timeless tradition of trick-or-treating, with a creepy twist, memorable characters, and, of course, monsters. It’s a great idea to tie the beloved holiday of Halloween into a fun story for kids and young teenagers. It does take a while to get to the horror parts, but once it hits, it's decent. I enjoyed this book, but a few things took me out of the reading experience. I’m not a fan of books that take you out of the story to explain that scary stuff is coming up. Now, I totally understand it since this is specifically for ages 8 to 15, but it’s not necessary, in my opinion. It takes away from the natural flow of the story, and I’ve read a ton of Goosebumps books at a similar age and never seen that before. Some parts dragged on and got a bit too heavy on dialogue. Besides that, there is good suspense and mysteries along the way, which was fun to read, seeing how Dylan would react and strategize to basically stay alive. Don’t worry, no spoilers here, but I enjoyed reading about Dylan figuring out certain things in the Haunted Escape Room Houses prepared by Squidbeard. Especially with the heavy emphasis on sea horror, creatures, and yes, pirate zombies. “Them” by W.H. Chizmar is a solid debut novel for a new face in the horror community. While sci-fi horror is not my usual cup of coffee, I had a lot of fun reading this novel. Before I dive into my horror book review, here are all the trigger warnings I found while reading: - Violence against animals (rats) - Suicide - COVID-19 If any of these trigger you, please do not read this novel. Moving along, this was a fantastic sci-fi creature feature with an apocalyptic survival horror twist. If you love these kinds of horror books, this would be right up your alley. I enjoyed the sci-fi creatures here, as they were creepy as hell and unlike anything I’ve ever read or seen in sci-fi horror. Their descriptions, terrifying abilities, and the sheer havoc they wreaked were brilliantly executed. Don’t worry, no spoilers here, but this was a riveting story that I couldn’t put down, thanks to what these creatures were and what they accomplished. I loved the formatting, with two stories unfolding at once. One follows someone dealing with the aftermath of these creatures reigning in blood, and the other provides an interesting backstory to fill the gaps. This was uniquely written and wasn’t confusing. It made total sense to structure the narrative this way, making the dual timelines seamless to follow. The story's overall suspense and thrills were entertaining, especially the plot twists and reveals along the way. This reminded me of the way his father, Richard Chizmar, one of my favorite horror authors, writes. Clearly, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. “One Day at Horrorland” by R.L. Stine is one of those classic Goosebumps books that makes you second-guess yourself anytime you enter an amusement park. I’ve never read this Goosebumps book before, so it was a real delight to sit back and enjoy it, since it still holds up today, even as an adult. Earlier this summer, I wanted to go back to my horror-reading roots with the franchise that started it all. I was just 12 years old when I first read “Night of the Living Dummy,” and it changed my life. As I always say, Stine planted the early seeds of horror when I was a kid, which later developed into trees of horror as an adult. Who knows if I’d even love horror as much as I do if it wasn’t for Stine, and this “One Day at Horrorland” book brought me back to when I was a kid. That’s why I decided in the summer of 2026 to do a “Summer of Goosebumps” nostalgic trip back to where it all started. The concept was simple: revisit one classic Goosebumps book each month of the summer to remember those glorious days of being a kid who devoured anything and everything Goosebumps. Summer reading was always special to me as a kid, especially with these legendary Goosebumps books. I grew up attending Scholastic Book Fairs, getting everything and anything Goosebumps. You know, Goosebumps t-shirts, bookmarks, posters, and I also loved the 90s TV show. As for the book itself, it’s an absolute blast. As always, I loved the subtle horror that hits at the end of a chapter, which makes Stine so much fun to read. I have many fond memories of going to amusement parks as a kid, especially Great Adventure and Playland Park. “One Day at Horrorland” brings all that back with a horrific twist, taking traditional amusement park attractions and giving them that patented Goosebumps-style horror. “Fabulous Bodies” by Chuck Tingle is the kind of unforgettable horror thrill ride that leaves your jaw on the floor. I literally finished this book and asked myself, what the hell did I just read? I still can’t believe what transpired. Before I dive into my horror book review, here are all the trigger warnings I found while reading: - Cancer - Violence against animals (dogs) - Suicide If any of these trigger you, please don’t read this book. Moving along, this was the first time I’ve ever read Tingle, and I’m impressed. He’s a great author with excellent writing, and this was a genuine page-turner for the most part. I enjoyed the characters, especially how quickly things escalated straight into some bizarre, surreal horror events. Don’t worry, no spoilers here, but this felt as if I was reading a fever dream. The big twists and turns were pretty insane, and I loved all the violence, gore, and brutality in the horror scenes. Besides that, there are many great quotes and meaningful moments. When it came to Poppy and everything involving Eddie, I loved the way Tingle handled the “boomer” commentary about old-school entertainers versus “influencers” of our time. I legit couldn’t stop laughing at most of what Eddie was talking about when it comes to entertaining, life, people, and what true talent is all about. Besides that, the entire horror mystery of this story added a nice level of immersion to everything. I enjoyed the layers of trying to figure out what was ultimately going on, especially when certain things were revealed, and things started to take off. I made many weird faces during these moments because I simply couldn’t believe it, especially once the bloodbath began. “The Exorcist's House: Resurrection” by Nick Roberts is the final chapter of one hell of a trilogy. This book series has been fantastic, with the original “The Exorcist’s House” and “The Exorcist’s House: Genesis” both being 5-Star reads for me. As always with Roberts, he delivered an epic conclusion to one of the scariest book series I’ve ever read that deals with demonic horror. Before I dive into my horror book review, here are all the trigger warnings I found while reading: - Religion - Suicide - Bullying If any of these trigger you, please do not read this novel. Moving along, the creepy demonic here is some of the best in the entire book series. It was pretty damn horrific, with an evil, Exorcist-level terror. I loved every moment of it, since it hits you out of nowhere and is guaranteed to make you wince as you read. The sheer brutality and violence in this one is insane. Besides that, I loved following Maren's story over the years, especially after the events of the first two novels. Roberts delivered an exceptional story here, not only to wrap up this trilogy nicely, but also to set things up for readers who want the true "The Exorcist's House" experience by reading them in a specific order. More on that in a bit. Roberts' storytelling here was brilliant, and I loved how it was formatted to follow Maren as she grew from a kid to a teenager. It was also nice to continue the stories with Nora, Daniel, and, of course, everyone’s favorite dog, Buck! Roberts pushed the envelope here, building on the aftermath of “The Exorcist’s House: Genesis” and raising the bar even higher. I connected with all the characters, and especially the memory of those not there anymore. Don’t worry, no spoilers here, but this was a genuine page-turner of a novel. “Carry Me to My Grave” by Christopher Golden is a horror novel that was so refreshingly unique, it completely blew my mind. This is the first time I’ve ever read Golden, and I’m genuinely impressed. His writing skills are exceptional, and this was one hell of a jam-packed read. Before I dive into my horror book review, here are all the trigger warnings I found while reading: - Parental abuse (physical) - Self-harm - Religion If any of these trigger you, please do not read this novel. Moving along, I loved how this book opened with a horror mystery right away. I had no idea what was going on, why it was going on, and what made one of the main characters, Mary Wise, so special. It added a nice element of suspense to the entire story, and my goodness, was it wild. Don’t worry, no spoilers here, but this was one creepy as hell story. Golden sure knows how to write a killer story, as this was outstanding. I loved the cast of characters, villains, and everyone else in between. There was zero fluff here, and I couldn’t read this book fast enough since there was so much going on. Nothing was confusing or dragged on at all. It was just awesome, old-fashioned horror taken to the next level with familiar tropes, but written in a way that I guarantee you’ve never read anything like this. For me, I love one-of-a-kind horror books. I don’t want the same tropes done for the billionth time, but something that stands out from the rest. This was a deeply unsettling book with an original twist, and horror events and situations that literally made me make weird faces while reading. My goodness, Golden brought the horror big time in this one, in such a brutal, visceral, wild way. I loved every moment of it, from all the gore, bloodshed, violence, and again, things I’ve never read before which made my horror-loving heart smile. Several of these scenes were action-packed and gave me a natural adrenaline rush during this epic journey across different places on a timer , with the clock ticking. “Widow's Point: The Complete Haunting” by Richard Chizmar & W.H. Chizmar is one of those books you simply must read. If you enjoy haunted house novels but want to take a stab at a haunted lighthouse novel with a found-footage twist, this one has your name written in blood all over it. Before I dive into my horror book review, here are all the trigger warnings I found while reading: - Self-harm - Suicide - Rape - Cancer - Violence against children - Religion - Domestic abuse - Sexual abuse If any of these trigger you, please do not read this novel. Moving along, I originally read “Widow’s Point” by this father-son author duo back in 2022, and it was a 5-Star horror short-story masterpiece. I loved that book, especially the scary illustrations that grew crazier and more horrific as I kept reading. There are a few illustrations here, but not as many as in the original, as the Chizmars decided to revise the original short story into a full horror novel that includes the original with Thomas Livingston, along with a sequel with a whole new cast of characters. They did a phenomenal job here, as I still remembered the original, and continuing where that left off with a whole "ghost hunting" group to investigate was awesome. I grew up watching and loving ghost-hunting shows, especially my all-time favorite, "Ghost Hunters." As an adult, I got major vibes of that show here, but in written form. Everything from the letters, diary entries, transcribed audio recordings, police reports, and backstory, while reading, added an immersive, modern feel to everything. It made it feel even creepier and more authentic. When it came to the actual horror, my goodness, all the horror events and situations were absolutely insane. I made many weird faces while reading, as they were gory, graphic, and terrifying. “CREEPSHOW: 13 Tales of Terror” by various authors is the first-ever prose short-story collection inspired by this legendary horror franchise. CREEPSHOW has been a big part of my life for decades now. I saw the original CREEPSHOW movie when I was about 10 years old, and loved every moment of it. I love the CREEPSHOW franchise so much that I originally subscribed to the streaming service Shudder just to watch and enjoy the CREEPSHOW TV Show. Hell, I even listened to the original CREEPSHOW movie soundtrack while reading this. Needless to say, I love CREEPSHOW and was beyond excited to read this once it was available. Before I dive into my horror book review, here are all the trigger warnings I found while reading: - Religion - Violence against animals (cats, bats) - Hunting animals - Politics - Rape - Drinking and driving - Nazism - Racism - Violence against children - Parental abuse If any of these trigger you, please do not read this book. Moving along, I enjoyed this book on my Kindle Colorsoft Signature Edition, which made the special CREEPSHOW illustrations before every chapter look amazing. I loved this touch of The Creep, giving a quick, terrifying intro to the short story that awaited. I enjoyed most of the short stories here, as the writing was exceptional and creepy, with the usual plot twists you’d expect from CREEPSHOW. These plot twists were so damn good that they felt like their own episodes in a CREEPSHOW movie or TV show. Don’t worry, no spoilers here, but this had some of the best, visceral, insane horror I’ve ever read in an anthology. Everything was so crazy and unique that it left such an impression on me. I made many weird faces while reading all those horror events and situations. You have everything from creatures and ghosts to sea horrors, vampires, horror train rides, and more. There is definitely a little something here for any avid horror reader to enjoy. Honestly, almost every single story hit the mark, but these 11 were the absolute standouts for me: Review continued in comments ⬇ #creepshow #horrorbooks #bookreview #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #booklover #readingcommunity #bookcommunity #readersofinstagram #horrorcommunity by @ltj81
