content warning: sexual violence

A few years ago I took these photos off of my Instagram account. I couldn’t bring myself to see this boy trail further from my likeness as I age. I want to accept him as a part of myself— for the teen in these photos, posting on Instagram was a big part of my existence. I want the boy captured here to be with me now, and to know that I have had the courage to speak for him:

At the time of these photos, I had recently survived multiple acts of criminal and sexual violence. This is something I had been silent about for a long time. The path of recovery is invisible and always changing. For me it has taken hard work, but more importantly dozens of angels that I forever feel grateful for.
I often feel alone in these experiences, with notions of masculinity and societal pressures making silence feel like the only option. The statistic is that roughly 45% of homosexual men are reported survivors of sexual violence. Unreported sexual violence is unfortunately common. Silence is the option chosen for me, but not the option I choose. Breaking the silence is a part of the journey.
