Coordination under difference, exclusion from consensus causes alienation from belonging, forming isolated areas of human intellectual loneliness. We search for peace like it’s some enlightened state of knowing, but how do we stop it from invoking its own inverse via prescriptive imagery and ideology? Assumption of the experience of the other can cause presumptuous action - the double empathy problem, so is it possible we’ve been searching for agreement using the wrong mechanisms? We turn to representation for comfort - perhaps if we model everything accurately enough we can escape the curse of misinterpretation, but do we risk the mischaracterisation of the function of the struggle to be legible to another in the process? What is the hidden cost of alignment and who pays for it? Do we lose something important through our incoherent observation labelled as understanding? Where should we remain steadfast in our ways and how do we decide what’s important without clouding the question through the misguided certainty of our own judgements? We have been hurtling towards greater individualisation while the felt experience of reality flirts with homogeny. These opposing forces combined create natural hierarchy, imaginary scales or graded social constructs, comparison being the thief of joy.. overconfidence the illusion of safety. So what should we do? When many answers are available it becomes far more important to know which questions to ask and to whom. How do we define measures of success and value more universally? How do we change systems without terrifying those that rely on them? How do we tell better stories that adapt to find space for us all without manufacturing false narratives of control through the limitation of language? The opposite of exclusion is inclusion, the counter-weight to presumption is truth - but if truth is the opposite of consensus, how do we find collective orientation in reality? A lack of imagination cites war as the only mechanism for peace, while creativity laughs in the face of destruction. by @lu_bish
