For her first solo exhibition at our gallery, Habitat, Lu Cheng deepens her investigation into hybrid relationships between spaces and bodies — or perhaps organisms and objects — in order to critically probe the distinctions between these terms. Her sculptures bring together aesthetic influences drawn
from the architectural, the organic, and the artificial, producing an effect of Verfremdung that intends to throw viewers back upon their own reflection.
Cheng’s hybrid beings — pseudo-natural objects, perhaps — resist definitive readings, yet remain suspended in a familiarity of forms that is at once alluring and unheimlich. Because this apparent acquaintance, this false recognition, can never quite be fulfilled, Cheng gradually reveals layers of ambivalent tensions surrounding these hybrid bodies. […]

We are thrilled to announce Lu Cheng‘s first solo exhibition at our gallery in Hamburg.

LU CHENG
Habitat

Opening: 27.6.2026, 6 pm

Lu Cheng (*1996) lives and works in Munich (GER). She is a multidisciplinary artist working at the intersection between sculpture, installation and viewer space. Her oevre investigates biomorphic forms, processual evolvements and the relationship between organic and constructed systems. Her ceramic and metal installations dynamically grow into the space they inhabit, raising questions of fragility, resistance and transformation. The production process results from deliberate craftsmanship and natural progression playing off of each other. Synthetic and organic elements melt together into biomorphic constructions, whose porosity dissolves the border between architectural form and natural growth.

WHAT HOLDS, WHAT LEAKS
Lu Cheng & Diogo da Cruz

19. April - 5. Juli 2026 I April 19 - July 5 2026

Was gibt Halt, was entzieht sich Kontrolle?
___________

With What Holds, What Leaks, @lu_cheng_ and @diogovonkreuz present a site-specific duo exhibition @kunstvereinaugsburg engaging with permeability, stability, and transformation.
Developed through a collaborative phase, a hybrid, processual structure of ceramic and steel emerges.
The exhibition unfolds as a spatial ensemble and open system—a structure that supports and yields, condenses and dissolves.
Organic and architectural logics intersect: fragile ceramic elements meet supporting metal frameworks and branch into biomorphic formations.
Lu Cheng creates bodily, growing structures, while Diogo da Cruz develops speculative, aquatically informed ecosystems.
A sound work links the installation to urban water movements.
What holds, what escapes control?
Material is not static but an active carrier of relations—the exhibition becomes a temporary, evolving ecosystem.

𝒮𝒽𝑒 𝓊𝓃𝒻𝓊𝓇𝓁𝓈 𝒽𝑒𝓇𝓈𝑒𝓁𝒻,2025
ceramics, steel mesh, wires, screws, and nuts.
During these nearly seven weeks in residence, we lived by the Mediterranean Sea and created our work here. Throughout this time, I kept reflecting on eternity, existence, and perception. In a state of constant change, memory is like water: it never stays still. It continually refracts and reshapes itself, often retreating to places we can no longer reach. During this period, I created sculptures, installations, and paintings that combine clay, metal mesh structures, and wax. I began to reflect on the role and relationship of the body as matter within the vast flow of time. Even lifeless shells can create a place of dwelling. This continuation of energy draws me in and deepens my thinking about what vitality truly is.
My final sculptural installation is presented like a relief. In architecture, relief itself is a kind of spatial narrative—a form of commemoration, a mode of storytelling. A hybrid biological structure and form stands and unfurls within this space, facing the viewer. The title of the work „𝒮𝒽𝑒 𝓊𝓃𝒻𝓊𝓇𝓁𝓈 𝒽𝑒𝓇𝓈𝑒𝓁𝒻“is drawn from a line in a book by Sy Montgomery, in which the author uses a human-centered metaphor to describe the movement of an octopus’s body. This anthropomorphic perspective and metaphor, together with the soft body continually resisting the harshness and sharpness of the deep sea, prompted my reflections.Softness as resistance flows through the long river of memory. ( Lu Cheng )
