POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Today marks one year since the launch of my book Escritos Paliativos.
The book's journey, from my desk to the veranda of Kiela Livraria, was filled with emotions, encounters, conversations, and moments of silence. Over this past year, the book has taken on a life of its own, and in the end, that is what truly matters: seeing the stories being read, discussed, and making sense to others. It brings to mind Ondjaki’s words in the poem "olhar o cosmos": a year later, "there is always a book waiting for me"; as if the book I wrote continues to reveal new stories, even to me.

The exhibition UNEARTHED / Travessias Fragmentárias took form as a shared journey with artist @anita_sambanje. To summarise in a sentence quoted from me by the national newspaper from an interview on the opening night (even though I don't remember it): "By articulating traditions and spirituality, the show explores the multiple crossings that define human existence."

After a short break from curating, returning to this project was like coming back to a familiar place: from the rhythm of the space to the public energy.

The exhibition opened on 10 December 2025 and will run until 9 January 2026 at @camoesangola .

Synopsis
Woke up and chose violence paints a comprehensive portrait of violence in many of its forms, encompassing emotional, institutional, symbolic, and environmental dimensions, while also analysing the impacts of negotiations arising from the shifting spaces of power dynamics. It reflects on this pervasive presence and how it’s use, once appropriated, can be liberating.

André Cunha (ANG) (1987) lives and works between Luanda and Lisbon. He has an MA in Curatorial Studies from Lisbon Fine Arts University and Caloust Gulbenkian Foundation. Currently he has an ongoing project about Laboratório Nacional de Cinema of Televisão Popular/Pública de Angola and is curating the Carnival Trilogy Project.

Luamba Muinga works in curation, cultural research, and writing. His practice has been centred on reexamining history and the permanence of memory, on how we appropriate the past, extracting its context, to locate it in the present. He coordinates LabCC - Laboratório de Crítica e Curadoria, an art platform that dynamizes multidisciplinary projects within cultural structures as a facilitator of the practice of young curators and art educators in Luanda. Muinga is Angolan National Press Prize for Literature in 2022 and co-author of the publication "Are we not makers of history? (Bag Factory, Jorburg, 2020).

Yesterday in Berlin, a group of Angolans organized a demonstration in front of the Angolan embassy. They went to demand social benefits that the Angolan government owes them since the GDR.

These men were part of a program for contract workers established between the GDR and socialist countries. From the mid 1980's Angola sent to the former GDR between 1600 - 6000 Angolans who worked hard as part of a nation-building project. These workers left the country with the promise of having earned a scholarship. However, during their stay, they were distributed in factories, stores, and industries, facing social and labor restrictions and situations of racism, which worsened after the unification of Germany.

The unification of Germany represented a period of uncertainty for these workers. Government agreements were annulled by the new unified federal government. They were dismissed from the factories and the German government paid the Angolan government compensation that never reached these workers until today.

Today is Angola's independence day, and as such, many reflections on the country's direction/projects are required. I have been investigating this topic since my participation in the @zku.berlin program and have developed a research project. Future presentations, archives, and documentation on the project will be made public soon.

I am pleased and proud to announce that my book "Escritos Paliativos" is the winner of the 4th edition of the National Press Prize for Literature.

The book is a collection of 16 short stories, with characters that fortuitously cross paths with History and or various prophecies.

This prize comes to rescue the important place of literature in my artistic-cultural practice, which in recent years has been restricted to curation and research, because it is through it that many of my reflections are initiated.

Since we meet in Berlin, Clementine Butler-Gallie (@clemebg ) and me have been discussing how to create a simple and safe place where cultural practitioners would create a collective understanding of emerging, international curatorial frameworks. So we are starting Continued Conversations...

This call is for curators working in various contexts and continents to come together and contribute with their work, references and experiences through conversation sessions, resource sharing and collaboration. The first session takes place on 20th September this year at 7 pm (CEST).

In a cultural landscape that remains heavily hierarchical, based on a person's position and place, this initiative believes that there is a lack of space for open sharing of resources, experiences and opportunities through networking. This is a simple invitation to meet and exchange with curatorial peers, the conversations that continue from there will form the next steps for action and collaboration.
