MUREX - The Sauce

Postcard 006

An old local folk song says : “when summer comes, it is time of tomatoes”.

A long-standing tradition that is now slowly disappearing is making homemade tomato sauce. As soon as the tomatoes are ripe, families gather together for the harvest.
Then they cook and prepare large quantities of tomato sauce, enough to last throughout the following year.

Since January 2024, here at @avie.studio , we have been on a long journey documenting the history and wildlife of the Murgia Park in #Matera, southern Italy.

The result is MUREX, an audio-visual exploration of life and death in one of the most incredible landscapes on Earth.

MUREX - Apocalypse

Postcard 005

As of late July 2026, severe wildfires have burned more than 254,000 hectares only in the European Union.
While the whole World is burning, the Murgia Park has also suffered massive land destruction due to the human stupidity.

On July 29, the Murgia Park has been attacked by an arson fire, a completely deliberate act of violence against the nature and the whole community of
Matera.

This is not climate change, this is not a natural disaster; this is an intentional choice.

MUREX - Transhumance

Postcard 003

For centuries herdsmans and shepherds have been moving with their flocks of cows and sheeps from the high montane regions of Basilicata to the lower valley of Matera.

The ritual still goes on nowadays.
